Student Involvement is a high energy innovative department comprised of Campus Events and Promotion Fraternity & Sorority Life Student Organizations and Governance the GMU Esports program and Business and Administrative operations.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life is an administrative faculty position and is part of the professional staff of Student Involvement within the Division of University Life. This position manages multiple responsibilities while fulfilling the strategic goals as established by the office division of University Life and the university. Reporting to one of the Associate Directors of Student Involvement the Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life is responsible for the development of community-wide programs support and advisement of chapters and council and creating learning opportunities for the members of Fraternity and Sorority Life. The position also supports and provides leadership for various programs and functions of the unit.

Responsibilities:

Advising & Supervision

  • Directly advises two of the four governing councils National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) College Panhellenic Council (CPH) Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC);
  • Shares in the advisement of 40 FSL organizations through the offices chapter coaching model;
  • Regularly meets with students to advise coach collaborate and partner in their FSL experience;
  • Ensures students are following university procedures polices and council guiding documents;
  • Advises and provides support for recruitment/intake processes and expansion processes for two governing councils; and
  • Supervises trains develops and evaluates one Graduate Assistant.

Event/Program Development & Implementation

  • Coordinates community-wide engagement programming for the FSL community;
  • Coordinates civic engagement efforts for the FSL community;
  • Coordinates FSL New Member experience which includes but is not limited to Glance Into Greek new member engagement events and new member education;
  • Provides university policies and guidelines education and supports the implementation of events programs and initiatives from governing council and FSL chapters;
  • Serves as a collaborative supportive active team member for ongoing programming (e.g. Officer Training Series FSL Leadership Retreat New Member Education NPHC Step Show Greek Week Standards of Excellence etc.); and
  • Assists with major Student Involvement department programming efforts such as Welcome2Mason Mason Day and Homecoming by serving on working teams providing leadership and partnership etc.

Community Support Advocacy Outreach

  • In partnership with the SI Marketing and Communications Manager oversees marketing and communication for the FSL area (including social media website marketing materials and newsletters);
  • Manages the academic progress record keeping and reporting of organizations and designs programs to encourage scholarship within the FSL community;
  • Serves as a resource for faculty and non-campus advisors to Greek-letter organizations; and
  • Coordinates and manages records materials and other documents related to FSL.

Training & Leadership Development

  • Develops and facilitates workshops and trainings including but not limited to: risk management scholarship and academic support social event management values-based leadership group dynamics conflict management etc.; and
  • Facilitates Patriots Against Hazing workshops for new members and current/initiated members.

Unit/Division Support/Service

  • Responsible for accurate and timely communication to campus stakeholders;
  • Works collaboratively with university partners on existing and new university-wide initiatives;
  • Participates as an active member of the University Life/Student Involvement professional staff attending departmental meetings collaborating with other staff members and assisting with in-office and department-wide initiatives and programs;
  • Provides on-site supervision and advising which sometimes includes physical event set-up and evening/weekend hours;
  • Operates department vehicles including golf carts and the SI2Go truck to support event setup breakdown and execution for office-sponsored programs and activities;
  • Actively participates in University Life (UL) in-person divisional meetings initiatives and events to stay connected with institutional priorities and foster cross-unit collaboration;
  • Supports and volunteers at divisional programs and events contributing to a culture of service and community within the division;
  • Stays informed about best practices research and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SI and FSL remain innovative and responsive;
  • Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in related fieldor equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge working with fraternities and sororities and their respective governing organizations;
  • Progressive experience in direct advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations;
  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and collaboratively with team members;
  • Demonstrated experience working with a team to accomplish collective goals;
  • Demonstrated experience in providing effective conflict resolution;
  • Experience in developing and facilitating educational workshops;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing programs.
  • Knowledge of event management and risk management education;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability in advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations;
  • Ability to develop and implement educational/development programs on topics such as event management leadership and team development meeting management conflict management etc.;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty staff and students;
  • Ability to effectively engage with senior-level administrators in a highly professional manner;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with broad ranges of audiences; and
  • Valid drivers license: must currently possess an appropriate active valid motor vehicle operators license that meets all of GMUs requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Masons Vehicle Use Policy 1411 The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the drivers licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working in higher education at the undergraduate or graduate level;
  • Experience effectively supervising professional paraprofessional and/or student staff;
  • Effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills;
  • Proven skills of flexibility and adaptability to change;
  • Ability to connect with students from a wide variety of backgrounds;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members in a mission-driven department that serves a wide range of stakeholders;
