Job Summary

The Academic Advisor for the School of Film and Television supports undergraduate students in achieving successful degree completion by providing individualized academic advising and support of this goal the advisor also plans and executes a range of student and faculty focused activities that enhance the student experience and promote academic success. Under the supervision of the SFTV Associate and Assistant Deans manage daily activities of the SFTV Student Success Center to ensure fair equitable and responsible use of resources in support of SFTV students. Plan develop and implement co-curricular programs to educate students about their academic opportunities degree requirements and registration processes. Evaluate and counsel transfer and prospective transfer students regarding admissions requirements and academic deficiencies and recommend appropriate action. Work with the Office of the Registrar as well as other University Offices to support students through the degree clearance process. Track monitor and report on student attrition to identify trends and recommend plans to address high levels of student attrition. Advise students on navigating processes and the appropriate channels for requests via university resources. Act as a liaison to student-services related resources including central university departments and refer students as applicable.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Work with the SFTV Assistant Dean to plan execute and continuously evaluate academic advisement processes for all Undergraduate students in the School of Film and Television.

  • Guide and support transfer students in understanding and navigating their complex academic requirements and transfer credit evaluation processes. Plan and execute a variety of student and faculty activities to facilitate the successful integration and progression of transfer students within the SFTV program.

  • Counsel transfer and prospective transfer students regarding admissions requirements and academic deficiencies and recommend appropriate action. Advise potential transfer students from other colleges on campus and various other institutions on academic progress towards graduation and courses acceptable from other colleges and universities.

  • Review incoming student transcripts for document completeness validity and accuracy. Prepare credit summary forms for all prospective undergraduate transfer students to the School of Film & TV; research and resolve any questions/problems arising from this process.

  • Review and prepare Transfer Course Approval forms for students wishing to take courses at institutions other than LMU.

  • Coordinate co-curricular activities and functions with resource partners across campus for the purpose of engaging students in high impact practices as part of ongoing retention efforts.

  • Support students with various petitions and make recommendations regarding academic transactions including course substitutions unit overloads and exception requests.

  • Participate in recruitment admissions and enrollment events throughout the year as a resource for general program information.

  • Participate in the annual review of the University bulletin making recommendations to the Assistant Dean. Provide assistance to the Office of the Registrar in maintaining and using the content of these databases and relating them to the students degrees as well as tracking students study programs.

  • Prepare periodic reports as requested by the Associate Dean or Assistant Dean.

  • Assist faculty with questions/problems related to student records academic holds on-course audits degree audit exceptions and various other advisement-related topics. Must be able to interact with faculty and assist/tutor faculty in advising processes.

  • Assist Associate Dean or Assistant Dean with scheduling student services meetings activities and record keeping.

  • As needed represent the Associate Dean and/or Assistant Dean at committee meetings related to Undergraduate Education or Academic Policy.

  • Hire train and supervise work-study students to act as peer leaders in support of the student academic experience.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Bachelors degree. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge skills and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.

  • Minimum three years of professional work experience in one of the Student Services program areas or a related field (preferably in education) is typical. The incumbents experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of admissions procedures and graduation requirements; registration procedures university policies recruitment practices principles of organizational development and office management; spreadsheets; database programs; MS Office; general business knowledge.

  • Experience in planning coordinating and executing projects and responding to changing organizational needs.

  • Create clear and comprehensive reports.

  • Understand and interpret rules and directions to specific situations.

  • Maintain confidences and confidential information.

  • Counsel students relative to their academic programs and in relationship to their career objective.

  • Ability to work with prospective students in a professional helpful and effective manner in a high-volume high-pressure environment.

  • Experience with Banner (PROWL) or other academic records systems is preferred.
