POSITION SUMMARY: The STAR program at the Lafayette School provides a safe inclusive community for over 60 youth in grades 58 to learn new skills build friendships and thrive in a supportive environment. The program offers a variety of enrichment activities including art athletics STEM and student-driven clubs guided by youth interest. The goal is for participants to experience personal growth build positive relationships and develop leadership skills that help them shine like the stars they are. This is a 21st Century grant-funded program.
The Substitute Teacher will serve as a full-time program staff member providing daily support across the program. This position will step in to cover for Lead Teachers when absent assist with enrichment and homework blocks and provide flexible support to the Site Coordinator to ensure all program areas are supervised and running smoothly.
WORKING TIMES:
Fall Session: October 6 December 12 2025
Winter Session: January 5 March 19 2026
Spring Session: March 30 June 5 2026
Staff must commit to working MondayThursday 2:305:00 PM for the full program year.
Staff will also receive up to 30 paid prep hours (10 per session) to use across the school year.
REMUNERATION: $40/hour for hours worked.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide classroom and activity coverage for absent STAR Lead Teachers.
Support daily program operations by assisting with enrichment blocks homework time and community-building activities.
Collaborate with the Site Coordinator to ensure smooth program operations and adequate staffing in all areas.
Facilitate hands-on engaging enrichment activities as needed to maintain program quality.
Take attendance document activities and engage with families and students when covering a class.
Manage group behavior using Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies.
Ensure inclusive practices so that all students including English learners and students with disabilities can participate fully.
Step in to assist with family events field trips and showcases as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
At least 1 year of experience supporting middle and/or high school students in an urban school setting.
Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly and manage groups of students in varying settings.
Strong classroom management and facilitation skills.
Flexibility and reliability to provide coverage when needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous STAR or extended learning experience.
Current Lafayette employee.
Multilingual capacity.
Certification in Special Education and/or ESL.
