Job Description

Advice Solicitor

Are you an experienced family lawyer who wants to work with like-minded passionate women to provide holistic trauma informed and culturally safe legal advice and minor task assistance to financially disadvantaged and vulnerable women If so we want you as part of our team!

Womens Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) is a for purpose community legal centre providing free legal and other social justice services to women. We specialise in the areas of family law domestic and family violence child protection and sexual assault through our counselling notes protect program.

About the Role

As part of the advice team you will provide:

  • legal advice and minor task assistance to women across Queensland by telephone and in-person;
  • domestic and family violence duty lawyer services at Ipswich Holland Park and Caboolture;
  • outreach legal advice to women through our prison advice clinics at Brisbane Womens Correctional Centre and Southern Queensland Correctional Centre;
  • work closely with our casework social work and financial abuse prevention teams to provide holistic wrap around support to address legal and non-legal issues.

You will have access to two supervising solicitors for guidance and support and two legal support officers who support the team.

To succeed in this role you will:

  • be admitted as a legal practitioner in Queensland and hold a current unrestricted practicing certificate;
  • have a minimum of two years of experience in family law particularly in parenting disputes domestic and family violence and child protection;
  • demonstrate strong communication time management and stakeholder engagement skills;
  • be flexible and able to adapt to changing priorities whilst still delivering results;
  • bring a trauma informed approach to your work; and
  • be committed to ongoing professional development;
  • have experience drafting relevant court documents and managing family law and domestic violence files;
  • have experience in child support matters;
  • demonstrate strong decision-making and problem-solving skills including in crisis situations where client safety is at risk;
  • possess high-level knowledge of legal and non-legal referral pathways for women experiencing domestic violence and family law issues;
  • have a sound understanding of the gendered nature of domestic violence and legal/social issues affecting women;
  • be committed to the mission and values of WLSQ and able to work within a feminist framework.
