Employment Begins: 2025/2026 School Year

7 hrs/day; 5 days/week; 189 days/year

PARAEDUCATOR IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION OR CAMPUS SECURITY

STANDARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

Classification: Instructional Paraeducator Location: Assigned School(s)

Reports to: Principal/Vice Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bargaining Unit: NTPA

This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties responsibilities classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description may or may not perform all of the essential functions indicated in this position description.

Part I: Position Summary:

Responsible for in-school suspension program or campus security supervision to prevent detect and confront threats to students and the school and to help maintain discipline and orderly conduct within the school.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

Works under the supervision of a school administrator(s) who assigns responsibilities and provides direction and guidance. Campus security follows district and school policies and procedures in carrying our daily responsibilities. Administrators are generally available to provide guidance in most situations. However the campus security must be able and willing to independently exercise sound and reasonable judgment in emergency -school suspension paraeducator is responsible for supervising and maintaining order in the in-school suspension room.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment duties and responsibilities listed may include but are not limited to the following):

  1. Provide supervision of students before during and after school.
  2. Prevents students from defacing school property e.g. desks cubicles walls or any other form of vandalism.
  3. Remain flexible in making decisions responding to requests and situations on a case-by-case basis. Use independent judgment and knowledge of student progress to design daily interactions. Keep safety issues as a high priority.
  4. Reviews discipline infractions to identify and address student problem areas.
  5. Administer limited discipline as necessary under the guidance of supervisor. May be called upon to take action in instances of unsafe behavior without specific instruction from supervisor.
  6. Assists building administrators in implementing disciplinary plans investigations and detentions.
  7. Helps in the ongoing implementation of the school-wide safety plan and participates on the safety committee.
  8. Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned:

Specific to In-School Suspension (ISS) Paraeducator:

  1. Supervise in-school suspension.
  2. Inputs all discipline infractions into the computer.
  3. Maintains accurate attendance records for students in the detention room.
  4. Perform office duties such as maintaining student records assist with written reporting of student progress copy referrals or use a computer to type referrals to distribute information to various parties.
  5. Work collaboratively with classroom teachers and administrators to plan effective goals for students assigned to in-school suspension program. Exercise judgment on actions to take in handling tasks and use initiative and ingenuity to resolve special problems.
  6. Work with students on an individual basis as well as small groups to complete assigned work in the ISS room. Keep students on task.

Specific to Campus Security Paraeducator:

  1. Oversee the campus supervision plan.
  2. Patrol school grounds to detect unauthorized persons or vehicles.
  3. Check cars for parking authorization.
  4. Keep current log of authorized student drivers and issue parking permits.
  5. Establishes and maintains liaison with law enforcement and fire officials.
  6. Notifies administrator(s) and coordinates with administrator on notifying law enforcement of potential criminal activity.
  7. Calls law enforcement and fire officials for assistance according to the emergency plan and school administrator direction.

Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Paraeducator must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  2. High School Diploma.
  3. Either an Associates Degree or successfully passing the written Educational Testing Service competency examination.

Part V: Desired Qualifications:

  1. Bilingual skills.
  2. May be required to be certified or to become certified in first aid CPR and/or operation of defibrillators.
  3. Prefer two years of experience in a safety and security environment preferably involving daily interaction with students children and the public; school district experience preferred. Experience in safety and security procedures in a non-school environment may substitute on a month-to-month basis for the required experience.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit move about hear and speak.

Must be physically capable of running lifting pushing jumping and restraining when responding to students fighting intruder pursuit or other emergencies.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and move or restrain more than 100 pounds when required to intervene in student safety issues.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.

The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students exposed to student noise and learning resource noise levels.

The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
