Teaches various levels of progressive youth and adult ice skating/hockey instructional programs providing a safe successful and fun learning experience for participants. Teach the progressive skills that are fundamental to the sport. Promote an environment consistent with program philosophies and goals.
A day in the life:
- Instructs and supervises participants in learn to skate/ice hockey programs.
- Ensures safe use of facilities. Maintains security of facility. Reports vandalism and theft.
- Maintains all required records and forms.
- Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures.
- Set up and break down of equipment and facilities.
- Maintains the cleanliness of facilities and equipment.
- Communicates effectively with participants parents and staff providing accurate information related to work assignment.
- Participates in district wide special events as needed.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:
- Staff training: Monday 10/6
- Ice season at the Pavilion begins in late October with programs running through late March.

- Learn to Skate Classes (figure or hockey) - Tuesdays & Thursdays 4 - 6:30 pm; Saturdays 8:15 - 10:45 am
- Learn to Play Hockey - Wednesdays 3:30 - 6:30 pm
- Adult Hockey Skills and Drills - Fridays 8 - 10:45 pm
- Adult Hockey D-League Coaching - Tuesdays 8 - 11:30 pm
- Youth Hockey League - Mondays 3:15 - 7:45 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am - 12:45 pm begins in January
What youll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
- Figure skating OR ice hockey instruction including the fundamental skills of the sport.
- Safety guidelines related to assignment.
- Child development and age appropriate learning and communication strategies.
- Teaching methods practices and progressions for a wide range abilities and ages.
Skill and Ability to:
- Play hockey at an intermediate to advanced level.
- Plan organize and lead classes toward determined goals
- Communicate effectively with and to motivate youth and adult of various ages and abilities
- Lead and mentor newer instructors
- Demonstrate strong technical competency in skills teaching
- Physical ability to perform the duties
- Work cooperatively with others and create a positive respectful and constructive relationship with staff and the general public.
What were looking for:
Education Experience and Training:
- Must be a minimum of 16 years of age; AND
- Currently attending high school or High school diploma or equivalent; AND
- Must have ability to play hockey; AND
- Some previous work training/certification or volunteer experience related to position; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of education experience and training
Certification:
First Aid/CPR - preferred
Supervision Exercised:
Supervision is not a responsibility of this position; however instructor 2 provides guidance to Instructor 1 staff.
Supervision Received:
Work under the general supervision of Program Coordinator. Receive routine (daily/weekly) direction from Program Coordinator.
Working Conditions:
- Depending on program duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors which may include working in extreme weather conditions.
- Work schedule is varied and may require evenings weekends and holidays.
- Hours vary depending upon specific program needs.
- The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.
- Physical exertion includes frequent walking bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted pushing pulling and kneeling in order to deliver equipment and supplies.
- Job stress may include dealing with crowds uncooperative participants difficult individuals exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand.
Selection Process:
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge abilities skills experience and training. An offer of employment is contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by Bend Park & Recreation District policies including a background check and a driving history review when driving is required for position.
