Beef Northwest is offering a summer Pasture Rider Internship at Boardman Oregon. The purpose of the internship is to teach riders the key elements of animal health stockman ship and horsemanship in cattle feeding operation. Ultimately this will help Beef Northwest determine if you are a strong candidate for its Manager in Training Program post-graduation.


As a Pasture Rider Intern you will learn to recognize and pull all cattle that require treatment due to sickness and injury; as well as receive ship and move cattle as required utilizing low stress cattle handling technique. Should have good stockmanship and horsemanship skills. This person will work closely with the other Pasture Riders Pasture Manager and the Doctor Crew.


Job Duties:

  • Ride pastures per daily schedule identifying sickness and injuries
  • Accurately record all sick pulled cattle removed from pens on pull slip
  • Accurately record pens ridden on cowboy pen map daily before end of shift
  • Move cattle safely from pen to pen as directed
  • Assist in sorting fat cattle as needed and directed
  • Assist in loading and unloading cattle trucks as per schedule
  • Furnish their own tack and four well broke horses
  • Feed & care for those horses
  • Assist in processing cattle as directed
  • Assist in doctoring cattle as required
  • Clean water tanks as needed
  • Maintain yard housekeeping standards
  • Other tasks or duties as required by supervisor
Requirements


  • Strong desire to work in the Cattle and/or Feedlot Industry post-graduation
  • Strong work ethic and a positive can-do attitude
  • Has had exposure to identifying sick & injured cattle
  • Basic cattle handling skills
  • Good horsemanship skills and access to a horse to ride for the summer
  • Must be able to count cattle accurately
  • Horse & cattle background is essential
  • Excellent safety skills and awareness needed
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
