Job Summary:
With limited supervision develop and implement advocacy strategies that advance sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the U.S. and globally; support the Aquariums global projects Seafood Watch and other priorities; identify and implement recommendations or actions that advance policy best practice holistic solutions and/or other improvements within priority seafood commodities; work independently and with internal teams to develop strategies and lead implementation activities with a range of external stakeholders (government industry scientists etc.); develop and contribute subject matter expertise to advance holistic solutions in line with the Aquariums mission and values; requires strong communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders; perform other duties as required.
Core Activities:
- Conduct research analysis and tracking of policies related to Global Ocean Conservation priority seafood commodities (such as crab shrimp and tuna/ highly migratory species) and related ocean conservation issues (such as bycatch trade policy regulatory reforms and traceability).
- Identify relevant U.S. or international laws regulations legal decisions and other policies that influence priority seafood commodities trade and/or markets.
- Research key stakeholders that influence U.S. or international policies related to priority seafood commodities or conservation issues.
- Analyze and track existing or proposed policies including regulations noticed through states or the federal register or through international agreements/ Regional Fisheries Management Organizations FAO or other relevant bodies.
- Draft advocacy strategies that advance the Aquariums global ocean conservation priorities and/or build partnerships with key stakeholders (industry governments chefs etc).
- Consult with internal teams and external stakeholders as needed to inform development of strategies.
- Draft and update advocacy strategies as needed.
- Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in coordination with other GOC teams.
- Prepare and implement advocacy strategies or activities.
- Draft technical comments regarding relevant policies positions best practices and conservation issues.
- Prepare external talking points letters briefs and other communications to stakeholder audiences (industry government NGOs scientists etc.).
- Develop internal talking points memos or other communications to facilitate collaborations within C&S and other departments.
- Engage with key stakeholders through in-person or virtual meetings conferences and public processes.
- Prepare and implement targeted events with stakeholders to support Global Ocean Conservation priorities and projects.
- Develop event concepts in consultation with internal teams and external advisors.
- Prepare event objectives agendas participant lists and coordinate with relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare event materials such as invitations talking points presentations and other communications.
- Support event logistics such as identification of meeting spaces AV needs food and beverage and other practical considerations.
- Identify opportunities and engage with stakeholders to support the Seafood Watch program including working with industry governments scientists and other leaders in sustainable seafood.
- Support administrative tasks in support of the Policy and Stakeholder engagement team including working with contractors tracking budgets coordinating with other internal teams progress reporting etc.
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- A minimum of a Bachelors degree in ocean policy or science; or equivalent combination of education training and experience.
- At least 5 years experience in policy related to fisheries aquaculture seafood markets and/or ocean conservation.
- Expertise in seafood commodities regulatory affairs and/or seafood trade preferably with federal or West Coast experience.
- Experience in the legislative or executive branch desired.
- Outstanding research and analytical skills.
- Requires strong written and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement outreach and/or management of events with diverse stakeholders desired.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage programs and people.
- Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquariums Core Values.

- Must be able to travel periodically within the U.S. and internationally.

Annual Compensation Range:
$93500 - $119000 Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set
