Our client is seeking an assistant hatchery manager to assist the Hatchery Manager in overseeing daily hatchery operations ensuring optimal hatchability chick quality biosecurity and production efficiency in alignment with industry best practices and internal standards.
Minimum RequirementsQualifications
National Diploma or Degree in Animal Production Poultry Science or Agricultural Management (advantageous)
Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science (minimum)
Experience
Minimum 3 years experience in poultry hatchery operations including setters hatchers egg handling and chick processing
Supervisory experience in a poultry production environment is advantageous
Certifications and Additional Requirements
Understanding of HACCP and food safety regulations
Biosecurity training (preferred)
Valid drivers license
Familiarisation Period
3 to 6 months of training on company-specific systems procedures and quality standards
Housekeeping and Hygiene
Maintain hygiene and cleanliness across all hatchery areas
Oversee cleaning schedules and waste management procedures
Ensure proper use of cleaning chemicals disinfectants and PPE
Quality and Biosecurity
Monitor incubation parameters to meet hatchability targets
Conduct chick quality assessments and enforce biosecurity protocols
Oversee egg quality upon arrival and maintain accurate hatch records
Production and Maintenance
Monitor setter hatcher and chick processing operations
Assist with preventative maintenance scheduling
Track inventory of consumables vaccines and parts
Compile and submit production reports
Support planning for egg setting transfers hatching and dispatch
Safety
Enforce occupational health and safety procedures
Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with PPE use
Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions
Reporting and Communication
Daily communication with hatchery staff logistics maintenance and farm teams
Write reports on production statistics chick quality and incidents
Poultry hatchery processes from egg reception to chick dispatch
Incubation parameters and hatchery equipment calibration
Biosecurity and hygiene standards
Chick quality grading and trend analysis
Familiarity with hatchery systems such as Chick Master Petersime or PasReform
Strong leadership and people management skills
Analytical and problem-solving ability
Organisational and time management skills
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
High attention to detail and quality orientation
Computer literacy (MS Office and production software)
