Job Description

Job Title: Payroll and Benefits Specialist
Location: Uwharrie Charter Academy Asheboro North Carolina
Employment Type: Full-Time

We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Payroll and Benefits Specialist to join our administrative team.

Position Summary:

The Payroll and Benefits Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll and administration of employee benefits for all school staff. This role ensures compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and school policies. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills attention to detail and a commitment to supporting the schools mission through efficient and ethical operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Payroll Administration:

  • Process monthly payroll for all employees using payroll software

  • Maintain accurate employee payroll records including timesheets pay rates deductions and leave balances and reconciliation of benefits

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal payroll laws including tax reporting and filings.

  • Prepare payroll reports for leadership auditors and financial planning.

  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

Benefits Administration:

  • Administer employee benefit programs including health insurance dental vision retirement plans (e.g. NC State Retirement) and voluntary benefits.

  • Conduct benefits orientations for new hires and assist with open enrollment processes.

  • Maintain employee benefit records and ensure accurate deductions are reflected in payroll.

  • Serve as a liaison between staff and benefit providers to resolve issues and provide guidance.

  • Responsible for reporting to DPI OSHA and other reporting and auditing entities
  • Reconciliation between payroll and benefit deductions
  • Track leave balances and manage FMLA short-term disability and other leave programs.

Compliance and Records:

  • Maintain confidentiality of all employee information and comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.

  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting for audits and inspections.

  • Assist with onboarding and offboarding processes related to payroll and benefits.

Other Administrative Support:

  • Collaborate with District and School Leadership to support overall personnel functions.

  • Participate in annual budget planning as it relates to staffing and benefits costs.

  • Support other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate degree in Business Administration Human Resources Accounting or related field.

  • 2 years of experience in payroll and/or benefits administration.

  • Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook).

  • Strong knowledge of federal and North Carolina payroll/benefits regulations.

  • High attention to detail organizational and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field.

  • Experience working in a public school or nonprofit environment.

  • Familiarity with North Carolina state benefits systems (e.g. TSERS State Health Plan other related benefit suites).
