Purpose of role Save the Children Japan launched a new midterm strategy for 2025 - 2027 to grow the base of national supporters and to maximise net income across individual giving legacy major donor and corporate partnership fundraising to achieve greater impact for children in Japan and around the world. A Fundraising Director is required to develop launch and manage a sustainable fundraising growth strategy and program in Japan. They will provide strong and visionary leadership in the expansion and implementation of Save the Children Japans Fundraising Strategy and Plan and take an active role as part of the global Save the Children movement including working with the Global Fundraising Support Team.
This role oversees the Partner Relations Department which consists of three teams: Individual Fundraising Corporate Partnerships and Supporter this role the Fundraising Director will lead on the further development of a multi-channel integrated approach to individual fundraising focusing on growth in regular giving major donors and legacies with the support of the existing individual fundraising and supporter service teams. They will also lead the Corporate Partnerships team to further develop growth strategies in this area. The Director will empower inspire and guide a strongly committed team throughout this key stage of the development of the fundraising operations.
This is a role for someone with strong individual giving and corporate fundraising experience a motivated self-starter with the required skills to oversee optimisation and growth in key areas and piloting of new initiatives.
Primary responsibilities The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:
Strategic planning
Develop a fundraising strategy to significantly increase income across a range of fundraising streams including raising income from supporters in Japan through regular individual giving legacy high value gifts and via corporate partnerships in line with the international fundraising strategy.
Produce annual and long-term income and expenditure budgets and monitor KPIs and results against them advising management of any significant deviations and proposing any changes needed to plan and budgets required in response to deviations and risks.
Provide regular reporting on the progress of the fundraising plan and budget.
Identify and develop opportunities to increase income and optimise cost efficiency on an ongoing basis.
Strengthen cooperation between teams.
Management
Lead inspire and developthe fundraising team to drive growth including conducting regular supervision sessions and appraisals and identifying development opportunities.
Responsible for training and coaching the team.
Contribute to the strategic and operational direction of Save the Children Japan.
Develop and manage relationships and contracts with external suppliers.
Fundraising program delivery
Ensure excellent systems are in place to manage donor relations including integration with supporter services financial processing financial reporting and a marketing database.
Optimise test and develop supporter journeys and fundraising products to ensure supporter retention and development to deepen loyalty and increase income from supporters.
Optimise test and develop a variety of existing and new channels through which StCJ can acquire new supporters.
Ensure that fundraising activities consistently reflect the value of StC and comply with relevant legal regulations.
Further develop the high value program (major donors) legacy and corporate fundraising areas to further diversify and increase income.
Oversee larger grants where relevant
Maximise the use of StCs global fundraising resources to enable StCJs fundraising program to be developed as cost effectively as possible.
Share skills and develop relationships with the International Fundraising Team and fundraising people across the StC global movement.
Communications
Establish and maintain excellent relations with key donors.
Make presentations to select gatherings (potential major donors) and develop relations on a sustained basis.
Work with the Communications Team to develop a feedback strategy to engage all donors such as reports newsletters and the website.
Press relations work with the Communications Team to raise StCs profile in local media in order to support fundraising actions.
Profile Experience
Commitment to Save the Childrens mission vision and values as well as experience in relief and development.
10 years experience in mass marketing or individual fundraising and a proven track record in delivering revenue growth ideally with experience in raising corporate and high value funds or experience in business-to-business partnerships/management of key accounts.
Minimum five years experience leading managing and motivating a collaborative team
Native to proficient written and spoken Japanese and fluent English.
Experience working with customer or supporter/donor databases and ability to demonstrate understanding of customer service and loyalty to enable the development of a sustainable income base for the organisation.
Proven financial management and analytical skills including experience in planning and managing budgets.
Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to sell ideas and negotiate.
Relationship building and networking skills.
Experience managing external agencies such as marketing agencies.
Ability to work to deadlines and prioritise workloads.
Qualifications desired
Experience/knowledge of fundraising in the civil society/International NGO environment would be an advantage.
