Job Description

The Assistant Director of Communications & Marketing supports the Director of Communications & Public Relations in the development and execution of a comprehensive communications branding and marketing strategy for Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS).This role requires a results-driven creative and strategic thinker who can manage multiple priorities with focus and clarity while demonstrating initiative.

The Assistant Director leads the divisions marketing digital engagement and creative content efforts to strengthen brand awareness deepen stakeholder engagement and visually communicate the mission and vision of RCPS. The Assistant Director serves as the departments primary creative lead and is responsible for the design and production of marketing materials oversight of division-level social media and execution of targeted campaigns. The Assistant Director also serves as second-in-command for the department assuming leadership responsibilities in the Directors absence. This position reports to the Director of Communications & Public Relations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

  • Serves as the primary lead for marketing and branding efforts ensuring consistent visual identity and tone across all communication platforms.
  • Creates and executes compelling high-quality marketing campaigns that generate measurable results and align with the divisions strategic priorities.
  • Designs and produces marketing and communication materials including graphics publications infographics and multimedia content for print digital and social channels.
  • Plans creates and manages content for division-level social media platforms; monitors engagement and uses analytics to guide strategy.
  • Analyzes digital engagement data and other metrics to recommend adjustments for improved outreach and effectiveness.
  • Maintains and enforces RCPS brand guidelines providing resources and training to schools and departments.
  • Serves as a resource and trainer for school and department staff on website and social media best practices.
  • Collaborates with schools departments and the Marketing & Events Specialist to promote events initiatives and division priorities through targeted campaigns.
  • Partners with the Director to effectively drive recruitment enrollment and retention through coordinated communications and marketing campaigns.
  • Supports media relations and crisis communications efforts serving as backup spokesperson when needed.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and best practices in marketing social media and digital engagement in K-12 education.
  • Serves as Acting Director in the Directors absence to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Brings forward innovative ideas and creative solutions that elevate the divisions storytelling and brand presence.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators and staff across all schools and departments.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not supervise staff but may serve in a project lead capacity and provide guidance to team members. Serves as Acting Director in the Directors absence to ensure continuity of operations.

The duties of the Assistant Director of Communications & Marketing will have been satisfactorily performed when the evaluation of this person is at the standard or above on the applicable Performance Evaluation System.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors degree in marketing communications graphic design journalism or related field with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in marketing communications or related field preferably in education or public sector.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing marketing and/or social media campaigns with a portfolio showcasing creative and strategic work.
  • Demonstrated expertise with design software (preferably Adobe Creative Cloud) social media management tools and content management systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:Must be physically able tooperatea variety of equipment including computers copiers etc. Mustbe physically able tooperatea motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functionalstructuralor composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of datapeopleor things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructionsassignmentsor directions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability:Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence reports forms articles proposals contracts etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence reports forms evaluations contracts policies handbooks budgets etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation grammar diction and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise voice control and confidence.

Intelligence:Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude:Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including education legal and counseling terminology.

Numerical Aptitude:Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of descriptive statistics statisticalinferenceand statistical theory.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:Requires the ability to inspect items for proper lengthwidthand shape.

Motor Coordination:Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.

Manual Dexterity:Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament:Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

Physical Communication:Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to work effectively with students teachers parents and business/community partners.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills are required with the ability to track details and prioritize multiple simultaneous initiatives and timelines.
  • Strong creative design and visual storytelling skills.
  • Ability to develop and execute marketing strategies that drive measurable engagement.
  • Ability to attend evening/weekend events upon request and work a flexible schedule.
  • Authentic effective professional communication style with excellent public speaking and presentation skills and the ability to make presentations to large groups of people.
  • Ability to understand cultural differences with students and parents.
  • Work collaboratively with staff members and division personnel.
  • Work cooperatively with the designated supervisor and staff.
  • Understand program objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Performs accurate record keeping.
