About The Ocean Cleanup
The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop and scale technology to rid the worlds oceans of plastic. As part of this effort our Communications team plays a critical role in shaping the narrative building global support and elevating the visibility and integrity of our work. We believe storytelling is one of our most powerful tools to mobilize the world around our mission.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced and visionary Brand & Communications Director to lead and evolve our communications strategy with the goal of amplifying The Ocean Cleanups global impact. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of brand storytelling and strategywith a proven ability to inspire audiences scale social media followers significantly and own the entire messaging across PR internal digital and investor comms while protecting organizational reputation
As Brand & Communications Director you will shape the voice of The Ocean Cleanup managing a talented team and ensuring our message reaches a global audience across multiple platforms. Youll be instrumental in aligning all communication with our mission while empowering internal and external stakeholders with clear impactful and timely messaging.You will report directly to the CEO/Founder.
Your Responsibilities
Craft compelling narratives that showcase project progress and inspire support from global audiences donors partners and the general public
Oversee and mentor a 1015-person communications team ensuring collaboration performance and professional growth
Direct the creation and dissemination of content across various formats (social media video design copywriting media partnerships etc.)
Leverage digital platforms including podcasts YouTube and social media to expand reach and engagement
Safeguard and evolve The Ocean Cleanups brand identity in all communications ensuring it reflects our mission vision and values
Collaborate cross-functionally to align communication efforts with broader organizational initiatives and scientific developments
Manage relationships with external partners including media contacts governments and corporate supporters
Build and optimize internal communication systems to keep staff aligned and informed across departments and regions

Professional Qualifications
10 years of experience in communications public relations or brand strategy including leadership roles
Proven track record of elevating an organizations global reach through storytelling particularly in mission-driven or nonprofit settings
Strong strategic thinking with experience developing and executing integrated communication plans
Demonstrated results in audience engagement brand visibility and measurable communications impact
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (additional languages are a plus)
Experience leading diverse teams and mentoring talent in a high-energy results-oriented environment
Background in startup or scale-up communications is highly desirable
Desirable Qualifications
Experience working with media influencers and partners to maximize reach and impact
Familiarity with the environmental or nonprofit sectors
Strong understanding of emerging media platforms and digital trends
Cross-cultural communication skills and international experience
Hands-on experience managing crisis communication or brand reputation strategy

Additional Details
Work permit: A valid European Union work permit is highly preferred
Compensation: As a non-profit organization reliant on donations our salaries are aligned with mission-based compensation models
