Job Description

TERMS

Your current home employerremains your employer during the period in which you perform your contribution to the Center.

OVERVIEW

You will be contributing to a project titled Enabling Ammonia as a Marine Fuel which is structured into five workstreams. Your primary involvement will be in the workstream Controlling Ammonia Fuel Emissions where the Centres role is to monitor and where necessary reduce emissions resulting from ammonia combustion. This could be achieved through both technological and regulatory measures with the overarching goal of supporting the qualification of ammonia as a climate-friendly marine fuel.

ORGANIZATION AND TEAM

You will join the Ship Technology System team who is a part of the Fleet Transition Impact Hub at the Center.

PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assess the readiness of current technologies for quantifying emissions from ammonia combustion.
  • Compare methodologies to identify the most accurate and applicable approaches for emissions measurement.
  • Evaluate the maturity and effectiveness of existing technologies for reducing emissions from ammonia combustion.
  • Assess operational parameters that influence ammonia emissions.
  • Provide input to guide the development and design of new emission reduction solutions clarifying what is currently available and what additional capabilities are needed.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on ammonia emissions in internal and external engagements.
  • Contribute technical content to reports presentations and stakeholder communications.
  • Contribute to the development of regulatory frameworks and standards for ammonia as a marine fuel.
  • Work closely with other SMEs (both Center staff and secondees) to deliver outputs for the Enabling Ammonia as a Marine Fuel project supporting progress across the other workstreams.
  • Communicate with a wide range of stakeholders both within Center partners but also with externally (i.e. OEM marine technology vendor).
WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engine combustion processes emissions formation and control and measurement technologies
  • Expertise or a strong interest in ammonia or alternative fuels for maritime applications.
  • Analytical collaborative and mission-driven with a passion for decarbonization and sustainable innovation in the shipping sector.
  • Knowledge of aftertreatment systems such as SCR oxidation catalysts or novel approaches relevant to ammonia combustion by-products.
  • Familiarity with emissions measurement methodologies and an ability to assess and compare technologies for accuracy maturity and applicability.
  • Experience contributing to regulatory work.
  • Collaborative Mindset eager to work closely with cross-functional teams including external partners such as OEMs marine technology vendors and regulators.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving Attitude comfortable navigating ambiguity and contributing to pioneering work in a rapidly evolving domain.
  • A higher degree (MSc or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering Chemical Engineering Environmental Engineering or a related field is preferred. Experience in maritime technologies or working with alternative fuels in heavy-duty or marine applications is a strong plus.
