About the Role
Reporting to the Asset President Escondida BHP the Head of HSS will provide a unified HSS execution point for the asset aligning with global best practices. This role supports improvement initiatives and builds line HSS capability through coaching mentoring and expert guidance. Success is measured by effective implementation of the BHP Operating System (BOS) leadership in managing emerging HSS risks strong partnerships with leadership achievement of HSS targets aligned with the business plan and excellence in contractor governance and service delivery. This is a global search based in Escondida BHP Chile.
Key Accountabilities
About You
You will build strong relationships through effective communication and consultation influencing the Escondida BHP Asset Teams to foster a safe productive sustainable and improvement-focused culture. Fluency in both Spanish and English (written and oral) is essential. You demonstrate integrity care and create psychologically safe team-oriented environments. As a strategic thinker you prioritize critical deliverables across multiple stakeholders and bring creativity and learning agility to solve complex problems. Your proven analytical investigative and audit skills support sound judgment and effective decision-making in complex projects.
You value diversity and inclusion leveraging these to maximize team performance. You possess strong business and financial acumen with an understanding of resource extraction drivers. Energetic and results-driven you excel under pressure managing multiple deadlines with attention to detail. Your leadership fosters innovation technology adoption and continuous improvement. You establish credibility through technical expertise leadership and excellent communication engaging others with a focus on safety.
Requirements
Bachelors degree in Health Science Environmental Science Health & Safety Management Risk Management Engineering or related field; postgraduate degree preferred.
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English (written and oral).
Proven experience building and leading high-performing teams and cultures in mining HSS or related sectors.
Demonstrated confidence in safety leadership with accountability for self and others.
Minimum 15 years relevant industry experience with deep knowledge of HSE risk management concepts and practices.
At least 5 years management experience leading teams establishing work plans and delivering results through effective resource management.
Experience executing technical HSS work and leading major change initiatives.
Minimum 5 years operational experience in large mining operations or capital projects including budget responsibility at team level.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills able to negotiate and influence senior internal and external stakeholders including regulators and community groups.
