Description
NYU Buenos Aires is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Latin American Indigeneities: Resistance Resilience Renewal sponsored by NYUs Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Teaching begins in the Fall Semester 2025 (late August/early Sept-Dec 2025).
Course format
The course is taught in English and meets for 3 hours per week for 14 instructional weeks plus the final examination week and office hours. The instructor role includes all preparations delivery and grading.
Course Description
This course focusing on what is today Latin America provides an overview of indigenous communities prior to the 16th century Spanish Conquest then analyzes colonization and its effects as well as the impacts stemming from 19th century French and British imperialisms and from 20th century geopolitical hemispheric relations with the USA. Latin American nation-state formation and the institutionalization of racial hierarchies will be analyzed as well as the rise of indigenous resistance movements historically and in the present. The course will focus on the regions most notable indigenous social movements highlighting their enduring impact not only on the political sphere but also on cultural values in particular those relating to environmental justice. This NYU Buenos Aires course includes specially curated instances of place-based learning connecting students to indigenous community leaders in politics and the arts.
A strong candidate will have a Ph.D. or its equivalent in Indigenous Studies or another related field with demonstrated research in Indigenous Studies. Candidates with teaching experience and experiences with U.S. institutions of higher education are strongly encouraged to apply.
