Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking Deputy Director of the Division of Commodity Services. The division provides statewide coordinated management and administrative oversight of official uniform and unbiased commodity grading evaluation analysis inspection certification and audit programs based on established standards designed to identify quality and value. The offices within the division currently include Fruit & Vegetable Services Grain Services Livestock Services Peanut Services and Poultry & Egg Services. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing overall managerial administrative and technical assistance to the Director. The position assists the Director in ensuring the division achieves established goals and objectives as well as developing long and short-range plans to ensure quality services are available to industry. Duties include oversight of staff and management functions such as budget contracts staff training and licensure needs. Day and overnight travel is required for this position as program areas cover locations throughout Virginia. Once onboarded this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability hours and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealths telework policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable management skills that including planning human resources finance staff supervision and public relations in an economic marketing or regulatory environment along with effective methods and techniques of complaint and/or legal investigation. Strong written and oral communication skills along with the ability to work harmoniously with a variety of individuals. Computer proficiency. The demonstrated ability to plan develop implement evaluate and manage complex programs; to interpret standards and regulations; supervise a staff comprised of subordinate levels of supervisors and support staff; make procedural and policy decisions; analyze and interpret data; develop and maintain budgets to include fee-based budgets; analyze current and future industry trends and adapt current practices to meet and anticipate industry change. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid drivers license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. Once in position a valid Virginias drivers license is required. HS Diploma/GED required.
Additional Considerations
A combination of related education training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge skills and abilities to include advanced knowledge of Business Administration Agricultural Economics or a related field. Considerable and progressive experience with administrative budget and managerial responsibilities that include proven financial and human resource management skills.
