Job Description

The property team at The Sydney Morning Herald is looking for a Sydney prestige property reporter to write our flagship Title Deeds column and cover whos buying and selling Sydneys top-end homes. 

The ideal candidate will take a keen interest in the boldface names trading the most exclusive addresses in Sydney and the luxury homes that they buy hold renovate and sell. 

Reporting to the national property editor this is a senior role in the property team that requires regularly breaking exclusive stories in a highly competitive round. Advanced skills in cultivating maintaining and managing contacts are required along with a high-level ability to access and interpret public records. 

This is a 12-month parental leave contract role. 

Day to day you will: 

  • Cover the Sydney prestige property market for a highly engaged audience. 
  • Write the much-loved regular Title Deeds column breaking exclusive news stories every week about Sydney mansion sales of $10 million-plus. 
  • Maintain working relationships with Sydneys upper-end real estate agents and visit some of Sydneys finest homes. 
  • Comb public records for news leads and to back up tips and flesh out news stories.
  • Cover the upper-end home renovation scene including plans for alterations and additions. 
  • Think visually focus on our audience and consider feedback from analytics including collaborating with the national property editor on story illustration and headlines.
  • Attend to sensitive news stories in conjunction with the national property editor senior editors and in-house lawyers. 

Qualifications :

What youll bring:

  • A keen interest in the high-end property market and either a broad knowledge of the topic and a range of contacts - or a willingness to learn fast. 
  • Advanced newsroom experience and a track record as a self-starter who can work independently. 
  • Some experience searching and understanding public records or an enthusiasm to learn. 
  • High-level news judgement and an ability to problem-solve. 
  • Experience meeting deadlines and working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent copy and strong attention to detail.
