Job Description

Type of Appointment: Full-Time Probationary

Job Classification: Lead Custodian

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3690 - $4481 per month

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4pm

THE DEPARTMENT:

As a department within the Division of Student Affairs University Housing Services (UHS) is responsible for delivering a comprehensive student housing experience which includes operations in residential life business operations facilities management conference services and information systems. The department has an annual operating budget of approximately $30 million makes $2 million in annual capital improvements and houses over 2800 students. The department has 50 full-time professional staff persons and is complemented by a student staff of approximately 200. The Lead Custodian position has an important role within Housings Facilities team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a custodial staff of approximately 16 custodians and student assistants during work shifts engage in custodial duties and related work as required.
  • Supports the University as it relates to policies procedures and processes for health and safety sanitation and community living.
  • Conducts inspections and reports cleaning problems to custodians and/or reports damage to the maintenance staff inputs work orders through the online reporting system/computer.
  • Use of computer for communications research and ordering of supplies documentation of job-specific details and creation of reports.
  • Assists with budgets and monitoring of custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Perform custodial duties as needed including coverage of absent team members and other special projects to maintain appearance and cleanliness of residential facilities.
  • Provides training for the custodians in the proper use of equipment materials and cleaning techniques.
  • Plans schedules and coordinates personnel and work assignments using computer or manual methods.
  • Assists in maintaining employee time records and reporting absences and providing input to employee evaluations.
  • Inspects and oversees the coordination of deep cleaning contractors and campus vendors. Coordinates vendors work within portfolio.
  • Participates in staff meetings weekly leadership meetings and serves on department committees.
  • Serves as the department point of contact during emergencies and in the absence of the Associate Director.
  • Assist with emergency evacuation drills and emergencies as needed.
  • Must be available for call out in case of emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Driver License Valid and in State Valid CA Drivers license with insurance.
  • Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others.
  • Knowledge: Working knowledge of the methods chemicals and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures; and effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques. Abilities: Ability to provide lead work direction including training others in proper work methods and safety and providing feedback on work performance; read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; use computers to track work orders and order supplies and materials; establish promote and maintain cooperative work relationships with others; and analyze situations and take appropriate action.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • 3 years of experience leading a custodial work team in a fast paced changing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide lead work direction including training others with documentation visual aids and addressing various learning styles.
  • Experience using computers to track work orders order supplies and materials and running reports for business operations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using various communication tools such as email Teams Word documents Excel spreadsheets and other computer programs for university housing operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Experience working with college age population work well with students and professional staff.
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings to meet departmental needs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use and safety of cleaning chemicals and MSDS sheets.
  • Ability to analyze data reason logically draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations to the Associate Director of Housing Facilities.
  • Participate in and contribute to University divisional and department meetings trainings and events.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) bargaining unit 5. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum$3690 and maximum$6062 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using apersonal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points if their license is Class C or 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points if their license is Class A B or C with endorsements.
