Job Duties

The NAGPRA Collections Coordinator serves as the primary institutional contact for all inquiries related to Native American ancestral remains and cultural objects in the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundations (JYF) collections. This role involves coordinating and conducting consultations with Indigenous descendant communities in partnership with the Curator of Indigenous History and Culture and facilitating respectful engagement with researchers and internal staff. The coordinator develops and implements collections access policies and procedures aligned with NAGPRA guidelines supports research pathways and manages culturally sensitive data within the collections management database. Additionally the position is responsible for conducting inventory research and producing reports in collaboration with the Registrar for submission to National NAGPRA while maintaining thorough documentation of all consultations and correspondence. The coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring ethical stewardship transparency and compliance in JYFs care of Indigenous cultural heritage.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of and ability to apply best museum practices for artifact collections management cataloging registration documentation and artifact preservation with special attention to culturally sensitive artifact needs.

Knowledge of Indigenous material culture and archaeological collections to include ability to identify and describe artifact forms.

Experience with NAGPRA implementation consultation and inventory/report production preferred.

Ability to professionally and respectfully represent the agency with Indigenous communities and other institutions; excellent interpersonal verbal and written skills required.


Knowledge and experience working with collections management databases Excel and Microsoft 365 applications. Experience working in Vernon CMS a plus.

Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.

Additional Considerations

Coursework in Archaeology Anthropology History Museum Studies or related field highly beneficial.
Experience in artifact collections management working hands-on with artifact collections a plus.
