Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Student Advocacy & Policy Analyst is responsible for aiding the Executive team in developing advocacy campaigns policies and strategies. They will seek out relevant research within the post-secondary sector to develop student-centric policy recommendations. Additionally collaborate with OTSU Staff and Executives in implementing equity and inclusivity-related initiatives within the OTSU. This includes the execution of various initiatives and programming promoting equity across campus.


SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Policy and Research

  • As directed by the Executive Team research existing policy data and other relevant publications as they relate to ongoing advocacy projects
  • In collaboration with the President and the VP of Student Affairs will analyze provincial and university research/data
  • Attend and be a delegate for at least one general assembly hosted by the Ontario Undergraduate Alliance (OUSA).
  • Assist the President and VP of Student Affairs in the authoring of an OUSA policy paper

Student Advocacy

  • Collaborate with the VP of Student Affairs to resolve advocacy cases as they arise within the student body
  • Work with VP Downtown to advance student priorities with the City of Oshawa
  • Develop campaigns that raise awareness of advocacy concerns and where appropriate solutions provided by the OTSU to the student population.
  • Work with the President VP of Student Affairs and VP of Student Life to determine research and advocacy priorities as they relate to equity-deserving student affairs

Programming and Initiatives

With the support of the executive team develop campaigns initiatives and events that educate students on issues related to marginalized and equity-seeking groups

Develop events that align with nationally observed celebrations or acknowledgements

Communication and Relationship Building

Collaborate with the Executive team to build and maintain relationships with the University Office of Student Life. This includes but is not limited to: Indigenous Education and Cultural Services; Engagement and Equity; and other departments within the University community such as Human Rights.

Build relationships with the Executives of equity-seeking Student Clubs to hear their concerns as they relate to the OTSUs ability to address their needs

Committees

Sit on committees or working groups as requested by the President


REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a full-time student as defined by Ontario Tech University

Cannot hold another position within the OTSU excluding Clubs & Societies

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Interpersonal Communication:

Due to the highly collaborative nature of this role the position requires interpersonal communication skills. They must be able to ask relevant questions for task clarity and communicate frequently with their supervisors when developing campaigns and events.

Literacy & Written Communication

This role is heavily focused on writing policy and reading publicized research and data. Therefore the Analyst should be able to effectively interpret written information. They should also be able to write formal policy papers that clearly explain advocacy concerns..

Time Management

At times they may have multiple projects ongoing. Strong time management skills are critical to succeed in these situations. They should be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines set by the executive team.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

On an infrequent basis some physical labour may be required e.g. moving materials around the office setting up folding tables or putting up decorations and other items for special events. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

The work in this position is performed within routine office conditions. There is occasional commuting between campuses to off campus business or community events.

SENSORY ATTENTION

Working on a computer working with and communicating with students staff and community members.
