Thank you for your interest in the City of Glendale (Arizona) Firefighter Series . This recruitment process is for the Firefighter Trainee Academy list Career Firefighter Transition Academy and Bridge Academy lists depending on the candidates experience documented. We recommend candidates read the directions in theirentiretyto view critical details before completing the application.
All candidates will complete the Firefighter Series recruitment application with supplemental questions by the stated deadline. Upload proof of documentation as required for consideration. If invited to move forward in the process candidates will respond and participate by stated deadlines.

Candidates must be truthful and accurate. Falsifying making errors or omitting information during any stage of the selection process may make a candidate ineligible for consideration.

- Access to the current application is available on the city web page under the JOBS and Search for the City of Glendale Firefighter Series and apply. Candidates may be asked to create an application account if they do not already have one. Glendale Fire Department Firefighter Process for All Candidates
Mandatory test components will have different conditions that the applicant will need to complete or attend by stated deadlines. Candidates should be aware that if they are invited to a test process component they :
- Are responsible for access to their own resources communications / online services with reliable connection and transportation
- May be scheduled on weekdays weekends or holidays
- May be invited to in person assessments at our facility if successful in prior testing components
Specific testing dates and/or component details are notavailable currently. Successful candidates will receive more information if selected to move through the process.
Essential Functions
- Provides emergency fire suppression rescue and medical services. Responds to alarms as a member of a firefighting company.
- Lays and connects hose lines directs water and pressure streams uses chemical extinguishers raises and climbs ladders ventilates buildings rescues persons. Operates all types of bars hooks lines forcible entry tools and other rescue equipment.
- Protects citizens property; performs salvage and clean-up operations.
- Provides emergency medical technician level assistance at injury or accident scenes involving basic life support and paramedic support functions.
- Performs first responder hazardous materials procedures.
- Cleans apparatus and equipment; replaces medical supplies and repairs equipment used during emergency responses.
- Prepares and maintains records logs and reports regarding alarms inspections medical emergencies and fire prevention activities.
- Operates all necessary equipment including computer terminals power tools hand tools and fire apparatus.
- Participates in drills and classes pertaining to medical services fire suppression rescue street locations hydraulics and fire inspections.
- Participates in public education and community relations activities. Participates in fire prevention inspections and enforces related fire codes.
- May assist the Police Department with traffic or crowd control.
- Participates in a physical fitness program to maintain required physical condition.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors
Firefighter Series Process Qualifications(firefighter trainee / firefighter)
Qualifications / requirements are necessary by time of hireunless otherwise specified.
Any equivalent combination of education training and experience that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education. City success Factor Classification Level Foundational. Below is an overview for Firefighter Series qualifications which may include but are not limited to :
- High School Education: Diploma or GED by application close date (Uploaded with the application.)
- Age: 18 years or older
- Eyesight: Correctable to 20/40
- Resident of the State of Arizona
- A completed and active Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. A completed and active Arizona Paramedic certification is also acceptable. A National Registry (NR) certification for EMT or Paramedic is acceptable at time of hire but conversion to an Arizona Department of Health Services certification is expected by graduation of academy to remain in eligible status. Preference will be given to candidates that have an active Paramedic certification and provide proof at the time of application.
- Current CPAT : A current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is required for most general academy assignments. Glendale will only accept a CPAT from Qualified Agencies showing certified by IAFF (examples include but are not limited to: National Testing Network Maricopa Community College)
- Valid / Unrestricted Arizona Drivers License with an acceptable driving record
At the time of hire the city requires all employees to have an Arizona Drivers license and an acceptable (39 month minimum) driving record per practice by risk management. An MVR will be run by the city if a conditional offer is extended.
*Unacceptable Driving Record Criteria:
1 or more major convictions in 39 months; or 4 or more minor convictions in 39 months or 3 or more MVR at-fault vehicle accidents in 39 months or Combination of minor convictions and MVR at-fault accidents totaling 4 or more in 39 months.

Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) Preference Points
Read the eligibility criteria regarding ARS 38-492sections A B C D E on the ARS 38-492 web page :
To receive consideration forARS preference points after receiving a passing score upload acceptable and valid documentation showing necessary information (name etc.) with this city application (PDF preferred).
Veteran (5 points) Attach DD214 Member 4 or certification from the VA
- Veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States; and
- release or discharge from Active Duty (separated) from the U.S. armed forces
- under honorable conditions and
- following more than six (6) months of active duty
Disabled Person (5 points) Attach a certification of the disability by the medical provider
Veteran and Disabled Person (10 points) also attach SF-15 or certification from the VA

Selection Process for All Candidates
Candidates whose information testing training education knowledge skills abilities and experience most closely meet the needs of the position may be invited to participate in the next steps of the process. The Fire Chief has final selection authority after reviewing all process information. Human Resources and the Fire Department reserve the right to terminate or extend the life of a process or an eligibility list at any time.
Successful candidates must pass the conditional hiring process which includes but is not limited to post offer: Department of Public Safety and FBI background check fingerprint MVR alcohol/drug testing employer reference check and a medical physical administered by a Glendale Fire Department authorized physician.
All selected candidates will begin at the Firefighter Trainee designation and must successfully complete the assigned academy (Glendale firefighter trainee academy or advanced academys; Career Firefighter Transition or Career FirefighterBridge) to become a Glendale Firefighter. Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as a commitment to serving others are important.
Career Firefighter Transition or Bridge Advanced Academy - only if selected and qualified
Candidates who wish to be considered and qualify for the advanced academies must meet the additional listed criteria including but not limited to the below requirements. Eligibility for each academy is determined by the Fire Department. Clearly document employment experience and upload required certifications relevant to training education and follow directions as requested.
Advanced Career Firefighter Transition and Bridge academy consideration require:
- Successfully completion of the current Firefighter Series testing process department selection for a conditional offer and successful completion of conditional offer process resulting in eligibility for employment.
- Active Arizona State EMT or Paramedic certification at the time of application. A National Registry (NR) certification for EMT or Paramedic is acceptable at time of hire but conversion to an Arizona Department of Health Services certification is expected by graduation of academy to remain in eligible status.
- Applicant to be currently working as a career full-time paid firefighter. This does not include compensated or non-compensated volunteer firefighter or temporary / seasonal / part time wildland firefighter status. Employment details must be included in the application for consideration.
Specifically For Bridge Academy: include IFSAC Pro Board or State Firefighter I & II certification(s) at time of application.Specifically For Transition Academy:Graduated from a qualified Arizona Fire Academy or training center; City Public Safety Training Center: Chandler Gilbert Glendale Regional Mesa Phoenix Fire Department Academy; or Temp APS joint fire training center. Certification at time of application.Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Required Work Schedule
24 hours on and 48 hours off unless assigned to temporary 40-hour assignments. The schedule is continuous rolling schedule and includes holidays andweekends if your shift falls on these days.
Working Conditions
Require working in heavy traffic in confined cramped areas at considerable heights and under stressful situations with exposure to extreme heat adverseweather conditions hazardous materials and contagious diseases. Work requires intense concentration sustained physical activity intense concentrationheavy lifting and climbing.
