Systems Development Engineer, Amazon Elastic VMware Service(EVS)

A wave of innovation is bringing sweeping changes to EC2 services with new virtualization capabilities deep platform integrations and unimaginable scale revolutionizing traditional thinking around how we run enterprise workloads in the cloud. We are looking for a Systems Development Engineer to build new capabilities to help customers run VMware-based workloads on AWS. The AWS Commercial Applications team within Amazon EC2 defines and builds integrations with external software applications running in cloud environments and helps to modernize enterprise customer workloads.
Our team just announced Amazon EVS and is expanding and continuing to build new capabilities for our customers migrating and running VMware-based workloads on AWS.


Key job responsibilities
As a SysDE in the VMware team youll work alongside outstanding builders principle engineers and business leaders to create new capabilities that provide enhanced experience for our customers running VMware workloads. All team members actively participate in product definition technical architecture reviews iterative development code review and operations. Along with this youll have the opportunity to interact with customers to understand and ensure their needs are met. Clear professional verbal and written communication with teammates and customers is an important part of the job.

Our SysDEs are expected to have a comprehensive knowledge of VMware deployments VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) ESXi vSAN and NSX. Strong proficiency in automating software deployments and operations using scripting languages such as Bash Python and PowerShell is essential. You will be leading performance testing and/or bench marking of AWS infrastructure for VMware workloads and driving continuous improvements. You will be Design and implement software-defined networking solutions such as virtual switches and overlay networks to enable flexible and programmable network infrastructure.

You will be inventing the foundation for the next phase of the products and beyond. A commitment to teamwork hustle and strong communication skills (to both business and technical partners) are absolute requirements. Creating a reliable scalable and high-performance service requires exceptional technical expertise a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science and practical experience building large-scale distributed systems. You should enjoy working on complex systems be customer-centric and have a proven track record of building exceptionally high quality software that delights customers.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations from foundational services such as Amazons Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWSs services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization youll support the development and management of Compute Database Storage Internet of Things (Iot) Platform and Productivity Apps services in AWS including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

- Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking storage operating systems)
- 5 years of designing or architecting (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience with PowerShell (preferred) Python Ruby or Java
- Hands on deep technical experience with VMware technologies including ESXi vSAN NSX and VCF

- Experience building services using AWS products
- Experience in networking storage systems operating systems and hands-on systems engineering
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C C# Java Python Golang PowerShell Ruby
- Strong understanding of networking concepts protocols and technologies including software-defined networking BGP BFD and IP routing. Deep knowledge of the OSI model with a focus on Layer 2 (Data Link) and Layer 3 (Network) protocols and their interactions.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
