Parks Planning (Urban Forestry) Co-op Student

Are you interested in applying your talents and knowledge and gaining valuable experience The City of Abbotsford has a three-month co-op opportunity starting September 2025 with an hourly wage of $19.98 $25.45 dependent on year of study. The Parks Planning co-op supports the Urban Forestry Planner and has the potential to take on additional responsibilities depending on your interests and skillset. If you are goal-oriented accountable and have a strong desire to contribute we want to hear from you.

This position will work from Abbotsford City Hall located at 32315 South Fraser Way.

Position Overview:

The City of Abbotsford is currently seeking a Parks Planning (Urban Forestry) Co-op Student to join our team in the Parks Planning division. This role will support the delivery of two specific projects:

  1. Development of an emerald ash borer (EAB) strategy
  2. Tree Canada Day community tree planting event

This opportunity provides hands-on experience in researching and developing an invasive pest management strategy and the delivery of a community tree planting event. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of urban forest planning including inventory management and pest and disease issues. They will take a team-oriented and collaborative approach to their work.

What you will do:

  • Refining inventory data to verify the size and condition of Abbotsfords ash trees.
  • Researching available management options including their feasibility and associated costs.
  • Developing a Public Engagement Plan containing recommendations for community education and involvement to support municipal efforts.
  • Develop a Surveying Strategy for ongoing detection efforts.
  • Provide support in the organization of a community tree planting event at the direction of the PRC Department.

Required Skills Knowledge and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in an Urban Forestry or related program.
  • A good understanding of tree inventory mapping and GIS systems.
  • A strong understanding of research methods and literature review.
  • Detail oriented with good organizational and writing skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
