The Mohs Technician is instrumental in providing a variety ofsupport functions that are critical in the lab such as processing embeddingcutting and staining tissue specimens so a quality microscopic slide can beproduced for diagnosis by the Mohs surgeon.
Additional duties may include independently researching ways tomodify or develop techniques managing the doctors clinics flow assistingwith dermatology procedures counseling patients and patient care follow-up.
Essential Job Functions: Properly map and process specimensfreezing and sectioning specimens per CLIA regulations. Implement appropriateprocedures for staining tissue processing embedding and other assignments. Efficiently organize file log and able to locate all slides/blocks; disposeof outdated slides/blocks as necessary per CAP/CLIA regulations. Adjustspersonal availability according to volume changes and activity surges. Musthave the ability to travel to mutually agreed upon locations to support patientneeds. Ability to function independently and to interact well with doctorpatients and other team members Operates laboratory equipment according toequipment guidelines. Checks care areas for malfunctioning equipment andgeneral maintenance problems on a regular basis. Reports findings to theappropriate person or arranges for repairs as required. Ensures that blood/bodyfluids biohazard materials needle containers and potentially infectious wasteare appropriately disposed of and removed from the laboratory areas accordingto infection control guidelines. Provide general laboratory maintenance suchas equipment maintenance as required making reagents daily cleaning andfilling fixative bottles. Orders stocks and maintains lab special orderitems and supply storage areas using par levels of supplies forms andequipment. Monitors expiration dates and takes action accordingly. Recognizesusage trends affecting unit supplies and makes recommendations for adjustments. Participates in staff meetings and workgroups by providing constructive inputfor practice improvements and solutions. Other duties as for Maintaining Role: Identifies self-learning needs relatedto job description and seeks out appropriate resources to meet learning needs. Maintains regular reliable and on-site attendance as scheduled by yoursupervisor. Maintains positive relationships with patients/families peersvendors and other team members. Maintains open communication with supervisorand team.
Receives and applies constructive input for performanceimprovement and individual growth.
Qualifications/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
One (1) year of prior experience as a Mohs Technician highlydesired.
Preferred Education (not required):
Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science ormedical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or
Have education and training equivalent to an associates degreein laboratory science or medical laboratory technology that includes:
At least 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institutionthat at a minimum include the following:
6 semester credit hours of chemistry
6 semester credit hours of biology
12 semester credit hours of chemistry biology or medicallaboratory in any combination
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Medical officeprocedure/exam room and laboratory environment may include exposure tocommunicable diseases bloodborne pathogens biohazards or toxic activities may include standing walking sitting bending and liftingitems up to 30 lbs
