POSITION FUNCTION:
As a member of the SWIS team the SWIS Worker meets with newcomer parents and students to conduct individual assessments and provide referrals for both parents and students. They plan and facilitate educational workshops and group activities on various topics. The SWIS Worker supports families children and youth within the designated age range specified by the program. Additionally they collaborate closely with school staff other programs at MOSAIC and community partners to promote successful integration through engaging activities during and after school hours.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide intensive support to children and their families in the program using the program delivery model
- Conduct intake and assessments using a structured process
- Use a strength-based approach to help address risk factors
- Develop a client-centered care plan and support children youth and families in implementing it to achieve their individual goals
- Provide settlement counselling support accompaniment resource information advocacy and referral as needed
- Organize and facilitate workshops for youth children and parents as needed and other gathering opportunities in the community to promote the SWIS program and MOSAIC
- Collaborate with the team by participating in program meetings and the organizations required training. Work together to develop an action plan for the care team monitor progress and adjust as necessary.
- Understand and participate in the evaluation of the program or project; may provide recommendations for revisions to the program/project model and operation
- Maintain accurate documentation on all clients and activities using the in-house database system and required program forms
- Maintain a flexible work week to meet youth/ children and their parents at times that are convenient for their schedule including before/ after school attending activities on the weekend and early evening
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Read write and speak English and Arabic other languages are an asset
- Newcomer youth services gender-based issues justice systems and social injustices faced by immigrants refugees visible minorities and marginalized populations; standard office equipment; case management and specific knowledge related to the function or the focus of the program project or service
- Bachelors Degree in or diploma in Social Work Humanities Counselling Child & Youth Care Criminal Justice or a related field or a certificate or diploma or course work in related fields or a combination of training and experience in an area related to the program project or service.
- Two to three years of experience working with children and youth populations
- Demonstrated experience working with students and families in a K-12 or any educational setting in B.C. and cross-cultural competency and understanding of child development and youth issues.
- Combination of training and related work experience working with newcomers from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge of the Canadian school system and awareness of immigrant and refugee settlement challenges to assist newcomer parents and students in transitioning into new communities and schools.
- Working knowledge of existing community resources and agencies for newcomers in the lower mainland
- Knowledge of MS Office applications and databases
- English communication skills verbal and written
- Workshop and facilitation skills
- Attention to detail ability to multi-task and time management and organizational skills
- Ability to apply sound judgement in decision-making
- Valid and satisfactory vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check
- Empathetic respectful discrete; tactful patient and diplomatic
- Current first aid certification or be willing to obtain one
- Access to and use of a vehicle is an asset
- Completion of the Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Course from CAMH for Settlement and Social Services Providers or willing to complete one.
COMPENSATION: $28.58 - $29.25 per hour
HOURS:
Full-time 35 hours/week
The successful candidate must be able to commute to 820 6th St New Westminster BC
