About The Position

The Technologist is primarily responsible for training researchers in the operation of Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) and associated sample preparation techniques ensuring both safety and user competency. The role also involves maintaining and developing technical documentation coordinating equipment servicing and delivering training across additional electron microscopy methods. Success in this position requires strong communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

The Technologist must demonstrate expertise in electron microscopy specimen preparation and laboratory operations alongside effective problem-solving abilities and a strong commitment to health and safety compliance. Supporting multidisciplinary research across the STEM College the role demands flexibility and excellent interpersonal skills to engage and train researchers from diverse academic and technical backgrounds.

To be successful in this position youll have:

1. Demonstrated experience and understanding of the operation maintenance and training of users on electron microscopes with an emphasis on transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

2. Demonstrated experience and general understanding of a range of specimen preparation techniques for electron microscopy.

3. Significant general laboratory operations and maintenance experience preferably within an electron microscopy laboratory.

4. Effective scientific communication and good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.

5. Understanding of and experience in applying knowledge of Health Safety and Wellbeing legislation in a laboratory environment ensuring laboratory user compliance.

6. Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills highly organised and the ability to work both autonomously and in a team.

The RMIT Microscopy & Microanalysis Facility (RMMF) is a core Facility within the STEM College at RMIT University. The RMMF mission is to collaborate with researchers from RMIT other universities government agencies and industry to provide advanced instrumentation expertise and training that enables researchers to solve key problems in science engineering and health..

The RMMF houses a suite of electron microscopes (SEM TEM) chemical surface analysis (XPS) and other analytical equipment. By utilizing these capabilities and our expert knowledge we support our researchers in achieving their research goals.
