Thats why what started in 2018 as a campus spin-off weve grown into one of Europes leading pre-seed funds backing over 50 deeply technical startups that are reshaping industries from industrial innovation to novel computing. With our second 35M fund were looking to expand our tight-knit exceptional investment team with a technical leader who can elevate our understanding of building great software products and engineering teams. Our aim is to be the #1 destination for deeply technical founders in Europe.

The Role

First Momentum is built on the conviction that exceptional engineers will build the future. Our current team reflects this - with experts in deeply technical domains. To complete this setup we are looking to add a critical piece: someone who has lived through the complexity of building and scaling software products at the infrastructure level.

Youll join a team of three investment professionals working directly with our two founding partners. This isnt about learning the ropes from the sidelines youll be a full member of our investment team from day one with real responsibility - in a role that is designed to develop you into a partner role over time. Our goal is to have you lead our investments into software infrastructure developer tooling AI infra & similar topics in a short timeline.

We are working as a distributed team (with about half the team in Munich) but are spending significant time in person for internal team gatherings. You will spend time across different ecosystems in Europe and ideally are already based in one to take advantage of your local surrounding. Since we are a small team we expect every team member to carry their own weight while making everyone else better at achieving their goals. We put heavy emphasis on winning as a team and are explicit in building a team of excellent people.

Tasks

Youll bring deep software engineering expertise to the heart of our investment decisions and our portfolio. This includes:

• Scout and invest into exceptional preseed founders building software infrastructure devtools & AI infra - alongside broader exposure to our other core verticals (New Industrials Energy & Novel Compute). Youll drive investments into software-centric companies and support the broader team on adjacent topics.
• Challenge us to higher standards in evaluating what extraordinary software builders look like. You will be the one to spot the difference between impressive demos and truly scalable technical architectures.
• Work directly with portfolio companies to improve their odds of success. This means sparring with founders on technical roadmaps helping them build high-performance engineering teams and anticipating the challenges theyll face as they scale from 0 to 20 engineers.
• Build relationships with leading co- and follow-on investors builders technical leaders and communities in software infrastructure and developer tooling. Your network becomes our network - and vice versa.
• Contribute to our internal tool stack that powers everything from deal sourcing to portfolio support. Sometimes this means building components yourself sometimes overseeing others but always with the perspective of someone who has shipped production systems.

Requirements

What Were Looking For

• Youve managed engineering teams and know what it takes to build both great products and great organisations. Whether you were a CTO at an early-stage startup or an engineering lead at a more mature company you understand the human side of building technical teams.
• Youve built deeply technical B2B products or infrastructure-level applications. You know the difference between a clever hack and a scalable solution because youve lived through the consequences of both.
• You are playing to win - you have genuine ambition to operate at the highest level actively hunt for exceptional opportunities and want to be where the most consequential technical decisions are made. You strive to work with the best people you can find.
• You stay current with your field: whether thats participating in hackathons contributing to open source angel investing or just being deeply plugged into the technical community.
• You have a bias toward action and active communication. This role is about building strong networks which means your calendar will mix focused work with calls meetings and events. Youre comfortable with both.
• Youre a strong communicator internally (we value a robust discussion culture) and externally (most of your day involves interacting with founders investors and other stakeholders).
• You should be open to travel for meetings events and internal team gatherings.

Ideally you have 3-5 years of relevant experience and some exposure to the investing world (e.g. through angel investing) but were confident we can teach you the venture capital skills you need.
