Job Description Summary
Wilkinson College of Art Humanities and Social Sciences Department Peer Advisors are a valuable academic resource who help students select classes that meet their interests and program requirements; provide information on academic programs policies and procedures; and make appropriate referrals to campus resources. They also provide advice based on their experiences as students at CU. Peer advisors hold drop-in and appointment hours in-person and remotely; they also respond to email requests for information. Under the direction of a faculty supervisor the student peer advisor will help their peers with 4-year major and minor planning major and minor-specific requirements accessing departmental resources including faculty program advisors student clubs web resources etc. and guide students to Academic Advising and campus resources. Additionally the Peace & Justice Studies Peer Advisor will act as the Office Assistant by assisting the Departments Administrative Assistant with general day-to-day administrative operational and clerical tasks related to the office.
Responsibilities
Contribute to a professional helpful welcoming atmosphere and maintain a positive attitude for faculty staff students and visitors of the department. Hold and manage calendar for in-person and virtual appointments and be available during defined drop-in hours. Meetings should be scheduled for 15-30 minutes per student. Complete the Peer Advisor Accountability Tracking sheet via Peer Advisor Canvas Den for every student interaction email in-person or virtual. Respond to all email and phone inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Perform basic intake analysis to determine if they can assist the student themselves or should refer the student to the appropriate department college or campus-level resource. Explain and guide students on the importance and relevancy of Program Advisors to assist with enrolling in waitlisted classes major-related questions and graduating on schedule. Strive constantly to be accurate and honest in all communication. Attend all training sessions and Peer Advisor meetings. Peer Advisor will act as the Office Assistant by supporting the Departments Administrative Assistant with general day-to-day administrative operational and clerical tasks related to the office. Maintain office inventory. Provide support for a variety of department events including but not limited to International Day of Peace. Other duties as assigned. For example connect with prospective and incoming students regarding the major program and share student experiences.
Required Qualifications
Professional dependable organized able to multi-task ability to collaborate. Able to effectively handle confidential and proprietary information. Effectively communicate in a professional diplomatic empathetic and tactful manner using preferred method and level applicable to the job. Proven accuracy and attention to detail. Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office Google Docs and/or relevant position software programs. Working knowledge of program requirements university catalog graduation and general education requirements. Must be a declared major/minor within the Department.
