The Lead X-ray Technologist oversees and manages the daily operations of the X-ray department and is responsible for the delivery of quality imaging services to all patients at Shepherd Center. This multi-faceted role is instrumental to the success of the imaging department and aids in providing important diagnostic information to physicians and providers for the establishment of optimal patient care.

Clinical Duties:

  • Schedules patients and prioritizes exams based on clinical need.

  • Reviews and verifies orders before beginning exams.

  • Reviews the patient EMR for safety concerns that could alter the quality of the exam or affect patient care and ensures review of screening forms and X-ray safety protocols prior to scanning.

  • Prepares patient and room for exams explains procedure transfers patient using proper lifting and transfer techniques positions patient and assists patient as needed during the exam.

  • Performs clinical evaluation of all patients and performs exams specifically as stated in the physician order.

  • Observes patient and equipment during procedures and reports any unusual occurrences in relation to patient condition to the Imaging Supervisor.

  • Delivers all images to PACS and the Radiologist and ensures receipt of exam dictation.

  • Assists other staff to achieve all patient care and imaging standards as needed and determined by the Assistant Manager of Medical Imaging.

  • Completes all daily tasks for optimal departmental operation.

  • Attends department staff meetings.

  • Manages inventory of supplies.

Administrative Duties:

  • Provides a line of communication regarding department affairs between the Assistant Manager of Medical Imaging and other radiology staff.

  • Reports departmental concerns to the Assistant Manager of Medical Imaging.

  • Provides guidance to staff in the form of leadership mentorship and uplifting encouragement to all staff.

  • Oversees patient exams and implements image review and critique of images.

  • Oversees daily workflow to delegate and distribute the daily workload based on departmental demands and staffing.

  • Monitors and implements adherence to JCAHO ACR ARRT and other Imaging standards.

  • Develops and maintains staff scheduling staying within allotted budgeted departmental hours.

  • Implements changes to the scheduling calendar and communicates any scheduling issues with managers.

  • Helps assist in initiating ACR exam protocols and imaging requirements during renewal periods.

  • Oversees and implements education of new personnel and all training materials and requirements.

  • Oversees and implements compliance of annual employee health requirements for all staff to include physicals TB and flu shot records.

  • Oversees staff completion of annual center-wide and departmental competencies.

  • Organizes and assists in leading department meetings.

  • Develops and implements new ideas for department efficiency and procedures.

  • Works with Manager and Assistant Manager of Imaging as needed for administrative projects.

  • Troubleshoots and monitors the operational status of all equipment and reports any issues to the PACS administrator and/or Assistant of Manager Medical Imaging.

  • Coordinates with vendors to schedule all required annual physicist equipment testing and equipment PM requirements and ensures documentation of results are stored in the appropriate electronic file.

  • Maintains department inventory replenishment.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Minimum of an associates degree in radiologic science or hospital-based radiology education program.

REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATION

  • Current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent.

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three (3) years supervisory and X-ray experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Uses body tools or special devices to safely effectively and efficiently to move guide or place patients. Involves some latitude for judgement regarding precision attained and the selection of what adaptive device(s) to utilize.

  • Ability to transfer and position patients consistent with lifting to 50 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Some potential for exposure to blood and body fluids.
