About the role

Within AEMOs Operational Support Division the Operational Forecasting team has a number of streams: the Operational stream produces demand and wind/solar generation forecasts for AEMOs dispatch pre-dispatch and ST-PASA processes and supports the control room with visibility about risks related to those forecasts and weather impacts on the power system. The Data Science stream is responsible for the development and maintenance of Machine Learning models custom tools and software and project work to assist with the delivery of these services.

This role can be based in any capital city.

What you will be doing

Your role will be at the forefront of the energy transition in NEM and WEM delivering data science services to the team such as building forecasting tools for demand distributed photovoltaics and variable renewable energy generation.

Youll undertake data extraction analysis and reporting and provide expert advice and direction on modelling and analysis software development data engineering and forecasting techniques. This is done in a small team that has access to advanced computational resources and toolkits (including in AI/ML) while engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders (energy market participants regulators and weather providers). You will:

  • Support the Operational Forecasting team delivering its forecast obligations through assisting producing the forecasts needed validating outcomes and developing/maintaining systems and tools (including dashboards) used by the operational stream.
  • Assist with project development tasks including the Engineering Roadmap and its subcomponents to develop the tools needed to be able to deliver quality forecasts as the system evolves with the Energy Transition.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications such as Computer Science Data Science Software Development Mathematics Statistics and Engineering.
  • Understanding of role and functions of AEMO and operation of the NEM WEM and Australian gas markets is desirable but not essential.
  • Ideally a statistical or data science background to deliver demand wind and solar forecasts including assisting with the design and development of conceptual models for use in answering operational business or regulatory questions.
  • Some exposure to Software Development best practises including collaborative coding standards dev-test-release cycles GitOps etc used to implement models data flows and dashboards in Python R SQL or similar.
  • Knowledge of Containerisation technology and a willingness to learn Linux system administration including networking and storage.
  • Experience in undertaking data preparation and manipulation for big-data analysis.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written in a clear accurate and concise manner.
