Job Description

Iowa Health Care department PCD (Professional Coding Division) is looking for a Coding Manager (Revenue Cycle Manager) who will directly supervise Coding Coordinators who typically oversee teams ranging from 10 to 30 Coders. The Coding Manager will serve as a resource for staff by providing supervision leader and expertise in departmental coding and compliance functions. Coding Managers provide expertise for data analysis trending and payor regulations/policies.

The Coding Manager will be expected to provide exceptional customer service to both our internal customers (hospital and clinical department administrators and their coding/billing and supervisory staff et al.) and external customers (patients physicians governmental agencies et al.) by demonstrating professional and excellent verbal and written communication skills at all times and able to prioritize and coordinate inquiries from patients staff and administration for a diverse professional and patient population.


This position is eligible to participate in remote work and applicants who wish to work remotely will be considered. Training will be held either ONSITE or via Hybrid (Inhouse/Zoom) from the HSSB building at a length determined by the supervisor. Remote eligibility will be evaluated upon a satisfactory job training opportunity. Per policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Plan organize and direct the coding operational and technical activities of assigned divisions for both physician and hospital coding within PCD.
  • Assist the Associate Director with administration of PCD by providing direction and oversight to the Coding Representatives and Coding Coordinators within PCD.
  • Assist with planning unit goals and perform quality assurance reviews to ensure established goals are being met.
  • Act as a liaison for PCD to the clinical department administrators physicians Hospital Administration third party intermediaries billing staff PFS and patients regarding coding and billing. Administer and monitor the coding and billing performed for the centralized departments within PCD to ensure compliance with all regulations and billing practices.
  • Prepare periodic and recurring reports for administrators within UI Health Care.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient information.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate reports to summarize the results of the department coding and billing activities.
  • Assist with budget preparation projections and monitoring.
  • Provide information and serve as a resource regarding coding and billing guidelines for physicians clinical department administrators and billing staff.
  • Obtain prepare assemble and distribute educational materials regarding coding.
  • Perform human resource functions such as: interviewing selection training performance evaluation promotion and disciplinary action; daily direct supervision for assigned staff; maintain personnel records: monthly time sheet & vacation and sick leave approvals.
  • Provide additional education and training when opportunities are identified or new processes are implemented.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of staff performance standards including development of motivational incentives within the institutional and state guidelines.
  • Assist with the coordination of intra-unit and inter-unit operations and procedures and participate in regular department meetings to discuss and assist in developing operational policies and procedures.
  • Advise staff and others requiring interpretation of policies and regulations of specific projects or programs in assigned work area.
  • Assist in the orientation training and education of new employees. Assist in review of work performed by new employee to ensure accurate and consistent coding and billing.
  • Assist in planning developing and implementing computer applications upgrades to coding and billing systems dictionary databases claims submission and other bolt on software products. Review payor policies and relay coding updates to appropriate departments.
  • Monitor statistical data including payer denial data in order to recommend and implement operational procedures and protocols to improve services reduce costs decrease days of revenue and increase cash flow.
  • Assists with preparing and compiling special and periodic statistical and financial reports for the Director of PFS clinical department administrators as well as hospital and college administration.
  • Work with hospital and clinical department administrators and their coding/billing and supervisory staff as well as nurses physicians residents medical students and allied staff including but not limited to; Human Resources; Health Care Information Systems; Admissions; Registration; Health Information Management Joint Office for Compliance and Patient Financial Services.
  • Work with external contacts including but not limited to third-party payers; various colleges/institutions regarding HIM or coding students; Iowa Health Information Management Association; American Health Information Management; American Academy of Professional Coders; patients; physicians; governmental agencies; and others as needed.

Equipment:

Onsite The department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors laptop/power cord docking station/power cord keyboard mouse headset and desk supplies can be found in the supply closet.

Hybrid while working onsite the department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors a laptop/power cord docking station/power cord keyboard mouse headset and desk supplies. When working offsite the employee will take their laptop/power cord to carry back and forth a second docking station/power cord to keep offsite.Prior to working offsite the employee at their own expense will need to supply 2 (two) monitors in addition to the university-issued laptop which will serve as a third monitor due to its built-in camera function a keyboard and a mouse. Employees will be required to provide a photo of the domicile office setup and perform an internet speed test by visiting with a minimum 30mb download and 10mb upload reflecting a University of Iowa IP address then providing a screenshot of the speed test to HR. The employees remote workstation should replicate the onsite setup as if they were working onsite at HSSB.

Remote - when working offsite the department will provide the employee a laptop/power cord docking station/power cord headset.
