The Team...

The Communications & Community Relations Division is a dynamic team of creative individuals who enhance a positive image of the Port by building awareness and understanding of Port operations among the international maritime industry port complex stakeholders and local and regional communities. The Division provides strategic communications services messaging media relations brand awareness community and educational programs as well as addressing both anticipated and unforeseen communications challenges and opportunities.


This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week up to 29 hours a week for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Communications & Community Relations Division is seeking four (4) Administrative Interns two (2) for our community outreach team and two (2) for our media relations team. These Administrative Inters will play vital roles in driving the success of the Division through a diverse range of high-impact community outreach activities special events social media graphic arts and video projects. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced professional environment. The Administrative Interns will learn how projects are created and executed from initial idea to final experience. Key duties for two (2) community outreach interns will include crafting and distributing creative brochures planning and attending community outreach workshops and delivering presentations. Key duties for two (2) media relations interns will include coordinating and managing projects from conception to completion writing for the Ports social media and executing video and podcast projects. These roles are perfect for a motivated self-starter eager to contribute meaningfully while developing valuable skills in communications operations and development.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Mininum Qualifications:

You must be able to demonstrate the following professional attributes and strengths:

  • Detail-oriented is a must.
  • Graphic design skills is a desirable.
  • Excellent writing proofreading and editing skills.
  • Strong public speaking and community outreach skills.
  • A solid working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook Excel and PowerPoint) is highly desirable.
  • Customer service experience is desirable.
  • Strong graphic design skills.
  • Knowledge of Port industry is a plus.

SPECIAL NOTE
This is an unclassified at-will position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any such an event the candidate has no right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.

The non-career Intern position typically works 20 hours per week and cannot exceed an average of 29 hours per week throughout the year up to a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two years. Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.
