Job Description

TITLE: Executive Director

ORGANIZATION: Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services (PEERS)

LOCATION: Oakland CA

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors

ABOUT PEERS

Founded in 2001 PEERS mission is to build a diverse community of people with mental health experiences who provide culturally responsive peer-based wellness strategies. We work together to eliminate stigma and discrimination for those with mental health challenges. All of our programs and activities from peer support groups to arts and educational workshops to one-to-one services are rooted in the practice of warm and welcome unconditional positive regard and acceptance of everyone no matter who they are or how they show up. PEERS has won awards and pioneered new programs to reduce the stigma about mental illness.

PEERS envisions a world where people can freely choose among many mental health options that address the whole persons needs. PEERS see a future where people with mental health experiences are valued for their essential contributions to society.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This position offers an opportunity to be a leader in addressing the impacts of mental health challenges in Alameda County and beyond. While PEERS has enjoyed stable ongoing funding and support from Alameda County PEERS is also looking for leadership that will have the skills to develop innovative programs and funding opportunities to further serve the community and adapt to current unfolding needs.

The next Executive Director will inherit an excellent working relationship with Alameda County and a highly committed and experienced senior management team. The next leader will also inherit the PEERS culture based on kindness pursuing justice diversity equity and inclusion within the staff board programs and externally.




Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership and Management

  • Lead the agency in the development and implementation of a long-term vision

strategies and plans with ability to adapt the current strategic plan to meet future needs

  • Oversight of Leadership Team
  • Oversee all programmatic operational financial and fundraising activities of the

agency

  • Champion and work toward imbuing all levels of the agency (internal and

external) with the values of justice diversity equity and inclusion

  • Foster an organizational culture of collaboration results-driven practice

innovative thinking responsibility and transparency

  • Maintain an effective and collaborative working relationship with the Board of

Directors

  • Serve as a compelling spokesperson for PEERS vision strategy and programs

to the community stakeholders donors board and staff

Fiscal Management

  • Develop manage and monitor the organizational budget in partnership with the

Finance Director and the Board of Directors

  • Strategically link revenues and resource allocation to facilitate and manage

agency and programmatic growth

  • Oversee the presentation of financial and organizational progress reports to the

Board of Directors

  • Lead the agency in the implementation of a long-term vision strategies and plans

Fundraising

  • Deepen and expand relationships with diverse funding sources including public

agencies foundations corporations and individual donors

  • Drive key results by working with the Board of Directors and

consultants in the development of a broader scope of fundraising

Public Policy

  • Position PEERS as an effective and vital consumer-led organization in Alameda

County California and beyond

  • Maintain strong relationships with ability to represent PEERS at public functions

and meetings including the Board of Supervisors state legislators and congressional offices

  • Maintain and develop professional collaborative relationships with individuals

and organizations that share a stake in the mental health space

Professional Experience/Qualifications

Preferred Experience:

  • 5-7 years of leadership preferred of progressively increasing responsibilities and

accomplishments

  • 3 years of experience as an Executive Director including management of

4 direct reports and a budgetary accountability of at least $1M

  • Executive Director/CEO experience highly preferred
  • Experience with oversight of complex diverse range of programs or operations
  • Legislative Political Savvy a plus
  • Excellent organizational development interpersonal communication

and personnel management skills are essential

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and retain a diverse cross-functional team

performing in a high-stress environment

  • Experience managing and negotiating complex budgets which include

government grants

  • Social services or mental health background ability to work with people who

have lived experience with trauma marginalization or other mental health concerns

Skills:

  • Outstanding communicator with excellent speaking writing and listening skills
  • Ability to publicly advocate on behalf of PEERS and the people it serves
  • Big picture thinker who understands how to increase diversify and optimize multiple funding sources
  • Proficiency in financial management and analysis
  • Ability to plan and execute on specific metrics to achieve organizational goals
  • Ability to build relationships with clients donors partner organizations and

government agencies

  • Fundraising experience including success in attracting foundations and corporate

support and major gift strategies

  • Computer skills including Google Workspace Microsoft familiarization with CRM

or donor management software

  • Experience as a mental health consumer or family member is a plus

Education:

  • Bachelors degree minimum

COMPENSATION

Salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience will be provided. Salary range is $130-135K.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND JOB SETTING

  • PEERS is a hybrid work space and the Executive Director will be in the office a minimum of 2-3 days per week with preference for 3 days per week.
  • Program headquarters is a standard office setting on the second floor of a multi-story building requiring the use of an elevator or stairs for access.
  • Environment includes diverse populations internally and externally with community members routinely coming in for workshops or trainings.
