An opportunity has arisen for an individual(s) to join the enthusiastic and forward-looking team of clinical dental tutors and academics at the University of Birmingham Department of Periodontology teaching undergraduate dental students registered on the BDS degree programme. Teaching on the open plan clinics supervising patient care at the Birmingham Dental Hospital and Department of Dentistry provides an excellent opportunity to shape the future dental professional using modern assessment and feedback technologies. The state-of-the-art Dental School and Hospital opened in 2016 as the first integrated stand-alone facility of its kind in the UK for almost 40 years. Students have access to modern dental equipment to ensure they get the clinical experience they need to enter the profession upon graduation.

The College of Medicine and Health (CMH) is the largest of the Universitys five Colleges with over 1700 members of staff ensuring teaching and research excellence across a wide range of pre-clinical and clinical disciplines.

Role Summary
The Department of Dentistry is looking to appoint Clinical Dental Tutor(s) to work under the direction of thelead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching and the Head of Department. To undertake clinical teaching and/or laboratory based simulation teaching and associated administrative duties including progress monitoring report writing and feeding into the Departments reporting processes. The demonstration of initiative in contributing actively to the continued development and improvement of the teaching programme is welcomed and expected.
To take responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of patients under student care. To ensure that patient treatment by students is carried out with minimal trauma and discomfort ensuring infection prevention and control measures are followed and not involving any danger to patient health. The care of patients takes precedence over academic concerns.
Clinical teaching sessions run through the day (08:30-12:30 morning and 13:00-17:00 afternoon). The post holder will be required to work through the day or on a sessional basis which will be agreed at the time of appointment. The post offered will either be substantive or on a fixed term basis in the first instance. Please indicate in your application your preferred working sessions and preference for a substantive or fixed term contract. Flexibility in delivery of sessions would be desirable.
Main Duties
Teaching
- Clinical supervision of Periodontology Specialty Teaching areas including in clinical and simulation environments.
- Simulation teaching utilising phantom heads in both the laboratory and clinical environments.
- To monitor student progress with clinical procedures and to intervene when appropriate.
- Participation in tutorials and lecture programme which may include development of new teaching materials as appropriate.
- Preparation of the required teaching material and conforming to relevant teaching policies including those published by Specialty Teaching areas. To clarify these policies where necessary through discussion with the area concerned.
Continuous Assessment / Feedback
- Maintain a professional record of student achievement on a sessional basis including timely provision of recorded feedback to the student.
- To provide input (report writing) to termly Continuous Assessment reports collated by the lead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching.
- Ensure that unsatisfactory performance is explained in a supportive manner and duly noted in records so that they can be substantiated.
- Provide feedback to students on strengths and weaknesses as close to the event as possible.
- Participate in examinations including from time to time the invigilation assessment question setting and marking of examination papers.
Clinical Organisation
- To conform to the clinical policies guidelines and standard operating procedures of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHCfT) and the Department of Dentistry.
- To support the lead for Periodontology Undergraduate Teaching in the safe and efficient running of the clinic.
- To complete clinical documentation as appropriate to the hospital and local teaching area.
- Check student entries for errors or omissions
- Electronically sign the hospital notes
- Sign laboratory cards and IRMER compliant radiography prescriptions
- Initial clinical stages and items
- Target items according to the Clinical Practice course requirements
- To undertake occasional sessions for patient treatment or screening of patients for recruitment to student clinics.
Required Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience
- Full registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC).
- Good Team Worker.
- Good IT skills and familiarity with electronic clinical records and systems.
- Meets the requirements for Occupational Health Clearance and enhanced DBS screening.
- Preferably have been involved in foundation training and have some teaching experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Capable of adapting these to diverse environments including clinic classroom lecture theatre one-to-one teaching.
- Able to communicate with colleagues and students at all levels in a clear effective and timely manner.
