Job Goals:
The primary goal is to lead the VBISD Special Education Department fostering compliant and results-driven practices across all special education services and programs for K-26 for VBISD programs and services for member school districts.
Qualifications:
Education: Masters degree is required.
Certification: Professional special education endorsement and special education supervisor or director approval is required.
Work Experience: Minimum of five years of administrative experience related to responsibilities described in this job description is required. Experience with both ISD program and regional/local supervision is preferred.
Skills:
1. Leadership & Administration
- Develop implement and evaluate strategic plans goals and policies for special education.
- Foster shared practices across member districts to ensure consistency in special education service delivery.
- Support and supervise special education administrators.
- Participate in local and state learning communities to advance the field.
- Stay current on research policy updates and innovations in special education.
- Promote equity inclusion and best practices in special education programming.
2. Program Development & Oversight
- Design implement and monitor effective special education programs and services for students K26.
- Ensure programs meet diverse student needs and provide opportunities for meaningful parent involvement.
3. Compliance & Legal Responsibilities
- Develop and provide guidance and training to promote full compliance with federal and state laws and to provide positive outcomes for students.
- Provide consultative support and technical assistance to member districts on complex special education issues such as compliance program implementation and legal matters.
- Represent the VBISD in due process hearings mediation and state monitoring activities.
4. Staff Development & Support
- Recruit hire and evaluate special education administrators.
- Provide ongoing professional learning coaching and support for best practices legal updates and effective leadership strategies.
- Conduct investigations provide due process and address staff misconduct.
5. Collaboration & Communication
- Develop positive and supportive relationships with VBISD and member district staff members.
- Provide regular updates and resources to the VBISD Special Education Department and member districts.
- Work collaboratively with superintendents principals teachers service providers parents and community agencies.
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders about program goals student progress and changes in policy or procedures.
6. Budget & Resource Management
- Develop and manage the special education budget.
- Allocate resources (e.g. staffing technology materials) to support student needs efficiently.
- Seek and manage grants or additional funding opportunities.
7. Data & Accountability
- Collect analyze and report data on student performance program effectiveness and compliance.
- Use data to drive decision-making and improve services.
- Monitor and report on performance indicators required by state and federal agencies.
8. General Professional Skills
- Adhere to federal state and VBISD policies and procedures.
- Model VBISD guidelines: Respect Integrity Compassion and Excellence.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines.
- Seek ongoing professional learning.
- Perform additional tasks responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to sit and work on a computer for long periods of time.
- Ability to travel within Van Buren County and across the State to attend meetings.
- Valid drivers license required.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
