About the Department

St Vincents Correctional Health Service (SVCHS) at Port Phillip Prison (PPP) provides primary health mental health and secondary medical health care to prisoners at Port Phillip Prison Laverton. Port Phillip Prison is a maximum security male prison accommodating approximately 937 inmates and is situated 20 km West of Melbourne. SVCHS works collaboratively with Forensic Mental Health Services (FMHS) who provides secondary outpatient and inpatient care for those prisoners with a mental illness.

About the Role

You will be responsible for the smooth and efficient functioning of the site in the absence of Nurse Unit Managers or on-site medical support. You are an experienced clinician demonstrating advanced knowledge in the management of clients with acute health care needs and demonstrating effective leadership skills to support the nursing this essential role you will be responsible for the collaboration and coordination of human resources clinical care and health service delivery and management of incidents and/or emergency situations that occur after hours within any area of PPP.

Duties

  • Coordination of the clinical services for the health care assessment and management of any patient within the prison including supporting the nursing team to make decisions regarding safe and effective patient care and clinical handover and SVHM Emergency Department and any other health agencies.

  • Human resources management including operational management of staff on duty sickness absence arrangements and clinical support.

  • Coordination of emergency after hours response in collaboration with Prison Management.

  • Incident management investigation and reporting processes including Correctional Provider reporting and Justice Health Notifications.

  • Liaising and escalating when required with the Manager On-Call and On-Call Medical staff.


Qualifications Skills and Experience

  • Current nursing registration with AHPRA

  • Advanced clinical skills knowledge and experience; including emergency medical response astute assessment skills and pre-emptive management of the deteriorating patient.

  • Experience in the management of a clinical unit ward or department.

  • Comprehensive incident and issue management including conducting investigations resolving conflict and formal written reporting/documentation.

  • Proven ability to work under pressure problem solve prioritise workload and meet deadlines with accuracy and quality.

  • High-level skills in Microsoft Office software and sound information technology skills

  • A Masters Degree in nursing and/or post graduate management qualification is desired but not mandatory
