Job Description

High School English Language Arts Teacher

DESCRIPTION:

Everett High School English Language Arts teachers are responsible for utilizing research-based pedagogical strategies to teach and engage diverse groups of students in grades 9-12. High School ELA teachers must work collaboratively with the EHS ELA Department Chair and colleagues throughout the year to continually improve our students literacy skills academic performance and educational experience. Teachers should be well-versed in the Massachusetts High School ELA Curriculum Frameworks Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) practices Depth of Knowledge and best practices in teaching literacy to ensure access to content for all students. Teachers must exercise culturally responsive practices to promote equity and respect for all students.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree in English Literature/Language
  • Massachusetts Teaching Licensure
  • SEI Endorsement

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters Degree in Education and/or English Literature/Language
  • 3 or more years of high school teaching experience
  • Dual Licensure in Special Education and/or English as a Second Language
  • Experience working in an urban public school setting
  • Proficiency in reading writing and speaking in another language in addition to English.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Plan and facilitate ELA lessons aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district curriculum using High Quality Instructional Materials from the approved Savvas (grades 9-10) or StudySync (grades 11-12) curriculum.
  • Manage classroom culture with Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies that motivate students and limit disruptions.
  • Collaborate with other members of the grade-level team including special education teachers EL teachers counselors deans and support staff to ensure student success.
  • Plan and deliver inclusive practices and SEI strategies for students who are English Language Learners.
  • Utilize available data to make instructional decisions that target the academic and literacy needs of students.
  • Incorporate language activities from common curriculum materials into ELA instruction including Speaking Listening Reading and Writing activities that align with State Standards for Language Proficiency.
  • Administer common assessments for students in grades 9-12 including IXL beginning middle and end-of-year diagnostics; common objective and summative assessments for each unit of study; standard midterm and final exams; MCAS; and ACCESS.
  • Communicate with families regularly using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations.
  • To close opportunity gaps employers should employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development relevant to improving literacy in urban students.
  • Advise a group of students through the My Career and Academic Plan (MyCAP) program throughout their high school career.
  • Collaborate with counselors to refer and support students who require SEL interventions.
  • Collaborate with Special Education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are properly and consistently delivered.
  • To close opportunity gaps employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development relevant to urban educations challenges.
  • Maintain accurate records relative to student attendance and classroom performance.
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events as assigned by the Principal Assistant Principal or Department Chair.

In accordance with the Everett Public Schools Teachers Association Contract.
