General Summary
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager assesses the daily operations of the assigned unit directs and monitor the daily work activities of the clinical staff to ensure quality patient care. Responds to and takes immediate action regarding quality issues on the unit. Demonstrates values of reverence integrity compassion excellence and stewardship.
The Assistant Nurse Manager must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patients status in order to identify each patients age specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric adolescent and/or geriatric patient group).
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

- Assesses daily operations of the unit
- Monitors daily operations of nursing unit to assess for short term problems.
- In conjunction with Charge Nurse manages daily unit staffing issues.
- Communicates throughout the shift with the Charge Nurse to be aware of ever-changing issues such as triage problems personnel issues and risk management.
- Informs Nurse Manager of major or recurring issues affecting daily operations of the unit.
- Assumes 24-hour accountability for the nursing unit in the absence of the Nurse Manager.
- Serves as a resource for the Interdisciplinary Team
- In conjunction with the Nurse Manager meets with Director of the unit to discuss issues and their resolution.
- Maintains foundation of knowledge in clinical and Charge Nurse responsibilities.
- Ensures quality patient care
- Interacts with patients and families to assess their satisfaction with care.
- Follows up on compliments and complaints made by patients/families and communicates need to the Nurse Manager for further follow up or action.
- Provides written follow up as needed to compliment and complaint letters.
- Informs the Nurse Manager of any concerns related to sub-standard ancillary support.
- Contributes to discharge planning of patients by attending Patient Care Rounds.
- Implements plans to achieve unit goals
- Partners with Nurse Manager to implement plans to achieve unit goal.
- Solicits information regarding unit operations and shares with leadership team and Nurse Manager for goal setting.
- Understands unit goals work steps responsible parties and timelines.
- Provides mentorship to committee chairperson to allow successful activity of committee.
- Partners with Nurse Manager to inform and motivate staff regarding unit goals.
- Identifies unproductive group behaviors and assists staff to engage in constructive discussions to define the problem and identify and appropriate course of action.
- Holds all suppliers of service accountable to the patient team unit and organization
- Conducts rounds twice each shift to monitor performance of support departments and convey expectations.
- Attends weekly environmental rounds and discusses with Nurse Manager results and trends.
- Utilizes appropriate organizational chain of command to convey feedback whenever service expectations are not met.
- Participates in departmental or institutional initiatives to improve quality and consistency of service.
- Communicates information necessary to maintain and improve functioning of the unit.
- Attends and actively participates in leadership and other departmental meetings.
- In the absence of the Nurse Manager conducts staff meetings in order to convey unit departmental and institutional issues.
- Effectively communicates organizational and departmental information in daily unit huddles.
- Mentor staff in role transitions
- Holds regular meetings of individuals undergoing job transition to assess role clarification and to offer support.
- Conducts regular meetings with Charge Nurses to improve unit operations.
- Assures Charge Nurses attend leadership classes applicable to their roles.
- Mentors nurses to progress within the PAM model.
- Utilizes the performance management process to assure consistency and quality of individual work performance.
- Monitors performance of Charge Nurses and completes performance management goal-setting periodic follow ups and annual review process with timeframes.
- Follows up on personnel performance improvement requirements and informs Nurse Manager of corrective action measures deemed appropriate.
- Applies the discipline process per hospital guidelines.
- Consistently tracks attendance management process.
- Assists in following up on late performance appraisals.
- Trains and mentors new Charge Nurses in the performance management process.
- Monitors and updates unit production board and updates metrics and action plans.
- Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital department or unit patient safety initiatives
- Acts to correct observed risks to patient safety
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority
- Implements policies procedure and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
- Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members
- Identifies possible risks in processes procedures devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
Qualifications :
Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN required and MSN preferred.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland or eligible for licensure through reciprocity.
- BLS Certification Required.
- Minimum of three-year progressive leadership management experience. Demonstrated success in clinical leadership role.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to think critically develop plan and organize projects.
- Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use computer systems/programs to manage clinical/administrative data.
- Previous experience with scheduling of staff for a large unit.
- Exceptional clinical expertise in Medical Surgical Nursing.
- General understanding of data collection and analysis.
- General understanding of financials for a hospital unit.
