Program Overview Rites of Passage (ROP) ProgramThe Rites of Passage (ROP) Childrens Program Worker assists the ROP Homeward Manager in developing and implementing programs and activities for Women and children. The program coordinator will ensure that programs and activities align with an African-centered value system and the organizations strategic priorities and meet the needs of participants.This position reports to the Rites of Passage Manager (Homeward Bound) and is responsible for working collaboratively within the ROP team to coordinate and implement programs and activities for parents and children of African descent in the Homeward Bound program.What You Will Do- Assist with planning and delivering after school activities which facilitate educational and life skills development.
- Provide spontaneous age-appropriate activities for children in the program.
- Escort children daily from various schools to our location (via walking).
- Help prepare and cook healthy snacks.
- Work in accordance with all relevant legislation by-laws program and organizational policies.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining good relationships with parents
- Responsible for reporting signs of physical or mental abuse of any children in care to the proper authorities.
- Ensures the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.
- Performs other related duties as required from time to time.
What You Bring to the Team- Post-secondary education in child and youth work social services education or child development preferred.
- 1 year of experience working with children within the targeted age group.
- Experience working with culturally responsive programming

- Knowledge of issues impacting African-Canadian families
- Ability to direct instruct and care for school-age children 4-12
- Ability to work additional hours on school holidays including March Break and summer camp
- Ability to handle emergencies
- Ability to work cooperatively with others
- Ability to use professional judgement on a daily basis within established guidelines
- Ability to maintain neat and accurate records
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information related to children parents and staff
- Knowledge of child development and learning needs of children 4-12
- Ability to work with children and parents who have experienced violence or homelessness and some understanding of this populations unique issues.
- Experience working with children with emotional or social challenges and asset.
- Interests in music arts or sports an asset.
- Proven capacity to work one-on-one with children and relate to them in a non- and respectful way.
- Familiarity with WoodGreen Programs an asset.
