Position Summary:
The ESL Coordinator provides campus instructional support to teachers and English Learner students for English language Acquisition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification and Experience
Bachelors degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teachers certification
- Valid Texas ESL certification
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledge of Texas Assessment Program district curriculum and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of the ELPS (English Language Proficiency Skills)
- Demonstrate a deep knowledge of sheltered instruction and SIOP
- Ability to use computers proficiently for word processing development of presentations and record-keeping
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to model instructional techniques/strategies
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication interpersonal and organizational skills
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Comply with federal and state compliance for serving English language learners
- Work collaboratively with campus Registrar to develop a communication system for identifying students who may be eligible for the ESL program
- Identify assess and place eligible students into the ESL program within the compliance identification window
- Acquire student LPAC documentation of services and Initial Home Language Survey from TREX or prior school attended within the compliance window for identification
- Establish and train a campus LPAC Committee to conduct LPAC meetings within the compliance window for student program placement student services state testing continued services assignment of student accommodations and program EXIT
- Obtain signed parent permission or denial of services for newly identified students within the compliance window
- Communicate student TELPAS levels (language proficiency) to content teachers in writing within 30 days of student placement in the ESL program
- Set students language goals within 30 days of student placement in the ESL program using the PLDs (Proficiency Language Descriptors) based on current ESL student proficiency levels with content teachers and progress model students progress
- Provide content teachers within 30 days of a student LPAC the LPAC recommended instructional accommodations in writing
- Provide instructional support for incorporating the ELPS in daily classroom instruction by setting the expectation of writing daily language goals
- Provide sheltered instruction and scaffolding professional development for improved instruction for English Learners
- Model effective teaching within the classroom; provide support through co-planning co-teaching push-in or pull-out services
- Assist the Bilingual/ESL Department in monitoring ELAR and ESL teacher certification at the campus
- Monitor student success in content core classes through data collection each grading period
- Collaborate with content teachers to provide instructional interventions for struggling ESL students each grading period and progress monitor student progress
- Support CTCs in administering the TELPAS state assessment to English learners
- Collaborate with CTCs to ensure appropriate testing accommodations are provided to ESL students based on LPAC decisions for state accommodations
- Participate in ARDS for ESL students when requested
- Assist campuses with data analysis and the development of action plans in response to the data (TELPAS LAS Links testing and STAAR)
- Assist teachers with selecting and modifying instructional materials to ensure alignment with TEKS/SEs ELPS and to address individual student language proficiency levels and academic needs effectively
- Attend Bilingual/ESL department monthly meetings/trainings
- Maintain a current ESL Roster for the campus using the Roster template provided by the Bilingual/ESL Department
- Maintain current compliance student documentation upload in DMAC
