Join Our Team as a SEE First Nations Male Mentor at Saltbush!

Are you interested in supporting participants who have faced challenges in workforce participation Saltbush is looking for a compassionate and culturally aware Mentor to join our team in Darwin.

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) First Nations Program is structured into male and female cohorts each supported by dedicated Art Tutors and Mentors. An experienced Trainer works across both groups guiding participants through their educational and artistic development. This holistic approach fosters a culturally safe and supportive learning environment that builds confidence communication and digital literacy skills all while completing accredited training.

Position Details:

  • Location: Darwin
  • Employment Type: Fulltime Fixed Term until 31 March 2028
  • Excellent Remuneration: $85k 11.5% super salary packaging 5 weeks annual leave
  • Reports To: Skills Education and Employment (SEE) Management Team
  • Hours: Normal business hours with flexibility for additional hours as needed
  • Travel: Occasional travel to other Saltbush service locations

This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is intended to constitute a special measure under section 8 (1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).

This position is only open to male applicants due to a genuine occupational qualification (GOQ) under Section 30 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) and Section 35 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1992 (NT) as permitted by our contract for the SEE First Nations Art and Literacy Project to ensure culturally appropriate service delivery.

The Role: As a Mentor within the SEE team at Saltbush you will learn and apply a strengths-based approach to goal setting and planning using mentoring coaching reflective conversations and encouragement to facilitate opportunities and learning to achieve outcomes that make a difference for individuals within an arts and literacy context.

This role requires an understanding of the multiple and complex barriers that individuals may face in accessing employment. You will work with a diverse range of participants and your actions must always be culturally appropriate respectful and collaborative. The role is designed to build your capacity to provide sustained meaningful support to individuals who have experienced significant challenges in workforce participation.

Additionally you will undertake the Saltbush 11055NAT Course in Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Mentors to further develop your skills and knowledge.

Your Journey with Us:

To ensure success in your role as a Mentor you will:

  • Undertake the Saltbush 11055NAT Course in Mentoring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Mentors.
  • Assist in the provision of professional case management services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander program participants.
  • Collaborate with Art Tutors and Trainers to establish individual plans with measurable goals.
  • Participate in activities to screen interview and select participants for programs.
  • Gather and share evidence of activities and achievements through social media and other marketing channels.
  • Collaborate with and support the Senior Mentor and Art Tutors to prepare participants for their LLND course and future employment opportunities.
  • Assist with mentoring sessions to identify progress and challenges and support participants in achieving goals.
  • Facilitate access to external services as needed ensuring cultural appropriateness and respect.
  • Maintain records of participation and attendance updating digital records for program evaluation.
  • Learn how to apply mentoring and coaching strategies to encourage independence in pursuing sustainable employment.
  • Work with the SEE team to achieve program outcomes and impacts over time.

  • Proof or evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Ability to understand and share the feelings of others providing emotional support to mentees.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Creative problem-solving skills that encourage resilience and ownership in participants.
  • Resilience and Patience: Ability to remain patient and resilient especially when facing setbacks or challenging situations with mentees.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a team collaborating with other mentors trainers and counsellors to provide comprehensive support.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication skills including face-to-face email social media phone contact and through written reports.
  • Digital Literacy: Reasonable understanding of MS Office and the ability to learn new systems for data capture and insights.

  • Active Listening: Skills in listening attentively and providing appropriate feedback ensuring mentees feel heard and valued.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adjust approaches and methods to meet the varying needs of mentees and respond to different situations effectively.
  • Conflict Resolution: Skills in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts in a constructive and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Motivational Skills: Ability to inspire and motivate mentees to set and achieve their personal and professional goals.
  • Networking Abilities: Capability to connect with a wide range of service providers community groups and employers to support mentees needs.
  • Organisational Skills: Strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Knowledge of Local Community Resources: Awareness of local community resources and services that can be leveraged to support mentees.
  • Employment Arts or Training Services Experience: Experience working within employment arts or training services preferably engaging directly with Aboriginal participants.
  • Relevant Certification: In Employment Services Community Services or similar qualification.
  • Arts interest: an interest in the arts preferably in the Aboriginal arts sector
