Job Description: Paraeducator Special Education/Behavior Intervention Technician

Responsible to: Director of Special & Support Services

Work Year: 180 Days / 3 6.50 hour per day positions open

General: Perform skilled confidential support and assistance to the classroom teacher and IEP team as required. Assigned within the building by the principal for special programs support.

Minimum Qualification:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • At a minimum AA degree or higher or two years of college (72 quarter credits) or Para Pro Assessment developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
  • B.A. in human services-related degree program preferred.
  • Certified or has an ability to be certified as a Certified Behavior Technician (CBT) when applicable.
  • Training in principle-based de-escalation and restraint methodologies preferred.
  • Previous successful experience in education social work or other related occupation preferred.
  • Desire and aptitude to work with children and/or young adults with special needs is required.
  • Knowledge and skills of computer applications used to assist with student learning.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team situation.
  • Ability and willingness to work with a diverse student population in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Organizational skills and flexibility to respond to changing student needs.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with staff supervisors and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively monitor and manage student behavior.
  • Must be able to function in a calm efficient courteous manner under stress and to exercise careful judgment confidentiality and tact in the performance of duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified under contract.
  • Valid First Aid certificate and CPR training required.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license and ability to obtain Type II license.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assigned by the principal for IEP team support and assistance in special programs. Works under direction of behavior specialist or Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
  • Provide targeted assistance to support students Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and Functional Behavioral Analysis (FBA). Assist in the intervention process during the Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) implementation and maintenance.
  • Assist teacher(s) with the daily supervision of students for the purpose of maintaining and providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Under the teachers direction administer multiple student tests collect and maintain diagnostic and test data update student records and assess student progress.
  • Assist teacher(s) with monitoring and managing student behavior and progress; share observations with teacher(s) and other professional staff.
  • Assist teacher(s) with implementation of various strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual educational growth and achievement goals.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance for staff which may include collection and data entry of information correspondence copying filing and preparation of classroom materials.
  • Administer first aid medical assistance physical support and personal care for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill medically fragile and/or disabled children.
  • Provide physical assistance for students with special needs such as feeding toileting proper lifting and positioning of students in and out of chairs and with adaptive equipment; assist students with the use specific equipment related to their disability (e.g. materials assistive technology visual aids).
  • Perform such other duties as from time to time may be required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience:
AA degree or higher or two years of college (72 quarter credits) and/or Para Pro Assessment developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

BA in human services-related degree program preferred. Previous experience working with school-age children desirable especially children or young adults with special needs. First Aid card and CPR training may be required. Certified or has an ability to be certified as a Certified Behavior Technician (CBT) when applicable.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand walk sit or talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; climb or balance; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift 50 pounds and/or push/pull up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment.
