Reporting to the Senior Director News Current Affairs & Newsgathering you will be responsible for deploying newsgathering resources to cover international stories. You will lead plan and guide daily international newsgathering operations across multiple platforms. You will also be responsible for overseeing the organization of foreign coverage plans managing associated budgets recruiting staff and liaising as needed with other departments and CBC. Furthermore you will be in charge of Radio-Canadas foreign bureaus and deploying crews to hostile environments. You will also be closely involved in managing transforming defining and delivering the editorial vision for Radio-Canadas international coverage.
Key responsibilities:
Propose lead and implement multiplatform coverage plans for major international stories.
Ensure the effective governance of foreign bureaus and their crews including locally hired staff.
Supervise staff in foreign bureaus and oversee their professional development.
Supervise teams deployed to high-risk areas and ensure thorough debriefings after each assignment in a hostile environment.
Ensure compliance with Health and Safety Guidelines Hostile Environment Assignments and in consultation with the Field Safety Adviser sign off on these deployments to the Senior Director of News and News & Current Affairs leadership.
Oversee the international newsgathering budget and signature event coverage plans in conjunction with the Senior Director News Current Affairs & Newsgathering.
Work closely with other departments involved in this oversight and with our external suppliers (Compensation HR Finance etc.).
Ensure that all staff reporting to you comply with Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Initiate and lead breaking news coverage plans.
In tandem with the leadership team help develop and implement the News & Current Affairs editorial strategy.
Liaise with Legal Services as needed.
Be responsible for delivering news coverage plans across all platforms in accordance with the strategic plan and in constant co-ordination with platform and programming teams.
Engage and motivate teams to create new formats and reach new audiences.
Be responsible for the assignment desk seven days a week.
Your profile:
University degree in journalism or a related field
Minimum ten (10) years journalism experience
Minimum five (5) years management experience
Strong leadership and teamwork skills
Solid command of national and international issues and affairs
Familiarity with multiplatform coverage challenges and strategies for reaching new audiences
Sophisticated understanding of digital formats and content delivery
Outstanding editorial judgment and strong analytical skills
Thorough understanding of CBC/Radio-Canadas Journalistic Standards and Practices (see our website)
Superior knowledge of journalistic processes and foreign newsgathering methods as well as the production of stories programs and content for TV radio and digital platforms
Knowledge of the media and communications industry
Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple developing stories
Strong self-starter
Excellent command of spoken and written French (language of work)
Good knowledge of spoken and written English
