This position will provide inclusive and intentional academic support and guidance for learners at various stages of their educational journey with Grand Valley State University from the Northern Michigan region. The role will support the Assistant Director of Student Services in driving recruitment and retention efforts across a range of degree programs.
Salary and Benefits: $42000 - 45000 commensurate with experience
Full tuition waiver.
Prospective Student Outreach and Engagement
- Meet individually and in group sessions with prospective students to provide information about GVSU programs admissions processes and academic opportunities.
- Conduct classroom visits and presentations to share GVSU programs and student support services.
- Assist students in identifying educational opportunities aligned with personal and professional goals. These can be certificates degree programs or professional development opportunities.
- Serve as back up to GVSU Admissions when needed at regional event including college fairs community outreach and open houses.
Academic Advising and Success Coaching
- Meet with current students to provide personalized academic advising including guidance on course selection degree planning and goal setting.
- Help students explore and identify academic and career pathways including certificates degree programs and continuing education.
- Monitor student progress and proactively reach out to unregistered or at-risk students.
- Identify academic concerns and implement timely interventions referrals and support strategies.
Student Engagement and Retention
- Support initiatives that promote student persistence and engagement such as workshops peer groups and mentorship programs.
- Collaborate with faculty career services and alumni to create co-curricular and professional development opportunities for students.
- Help plan and facilitate student-centered events that foster a sense of belonging and support academic success.
Communications and Resource Development
- Create and distribute student-focused communications including newsletters digital resource guides and announcements.
- Maintain up-to-date information on academic programs policies and student resources to support advising and outreach.
- Use data and feedback to inform student support strategies and continuous improvement.
Administrative Coordination
- Clarify and explain GVSU policies and procedures to students; refer to appropriate campus resources or leadership as needed.
- Participate in meetings and planning sessions to ensure student-centered programming in the Northern Michigan region.
- Perform other duties as assigned by leadership to support student success and regional campus operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Bachelors degree and two (2) years of relevant experience in higher education career advising program planning public administration or human services related fields.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
- An understanding of and preference for collaborative approaches to planning and problem-solving.
- Demonstrated innovative and independent decision making.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Professional experience in a college or university setting.
- Familiarity with student information systems customer relationship management (CRM) platforms and web-based registration tools (e.g. Banner Slate Navigate).
