As the citys official animal services provider we operate a dynamic sheltering veterinary and field services operation working to create a community where every pet has a home. Through innovation compassion and strategic collaboration we serve more than 16000 animals annually and impact thousands more through outreach education and support services.
Position Summary The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a mission-driven financial executive who provides strategic leadership fiscal stewardship and operational insight to support the growth sustainability and impact of KC Pet Project. As a member of the executive leadership team the CFO is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial strategy planning management and accountability for a complex multi-fund nonprofit organization with diverse revenue streams including government contracts donations grants and earned income.
Key Responsibilities: Strategic Financial Leadership - Serve as a key advisor to the CEO executive team and Board on financial strategy sustainability and organizational health.
- Develop and manage long-range financial planning scenario modeling and risk analysis to support strategic decision-making.
- Lead initiatives to strengthen organizational efficiency cost-effectiveness and financial resilience.
- Guide capital planning financing and resource allocation for future facilities equipment and program growth.
Advanced Financial Oversight
- Direct all financial operations including accounting budgeting financial reporting and compliance in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices.
- Oversee multi-million-dollar annual budgets with complex funding sources (e.g. government contracts donations program fees).
- Manage and monitor cash flow liquidity and investments in alignment with board-approved financial policies.
- Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly quarterly and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Enterprise Risk Management & Compliance
- Oversee the development and implementation of financial controls policies and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Lead organization-wide risk management including insurance legal coordination and contractual oversight.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of the annual audit and IRS Form 990 in collaboration with external auditors and legal counsel.
Grants Contracts and Fund Development Support
- Partner with development and program teams to design budgets and reporting for grant proposals and government contracts.
- Monitor grant compliance and manage financial reporting for restricted and unrestricted funding.
Team & Systems Leadership
- Provide leadership mentorship and performance management for the finance and accounting team.
- Champion the evaluation and implementation of financial systems technology and reporting tools to improve efficiency and data transparency.
- Lead financial onboarding and training across departments to build financial literacy and accountability organization-wide.
Board & External Relations
- Serve as the primary liaison to the Board Finance and Audit Committees preparing reports and guiding financial discussions.
- Build relationships with banks auditors legal counsel and other key external partners.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
- At least 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience including 5 years at the executive level preferably in a nonprofit organization.
- Deep understanding of nonprofit GAAP fund accounting and regulatory compliance.
- Proven experience with budgeting cash management audits and board reporting for organizations with budgets of $5M or more.
- Strong analytical strategic thinking and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor teams work cross-functionally and drive systems change.
- Familiarity with financial systems (e.g. QuickBooks Sage Intacct) and strong Excel skills required.
