Position Details
The Musical Director is responsible for teaching coaching and leading all musical elements of the Upper School musical production. This includes working closely with the Director Choreographer and other members of the creative team to ensure student performers are prepared for a high-caliber professional-level performance. The Musical Director fosters a positive inclusive and educational environment for student growth in musical theatre.
Essential Responsibilities
Pre-Production Planning
- Read the full score and libretto; listen to cast recordings rehearsal tracks and reference materials
- Research vocal style range and technical needs of the score
- Collaborate with the Director and Choreographer to understand and align with the overall artistic vision
- Help select and prepare appropriate vocal selections for auditions and callbacks
- Edit/cut audition selections and provide recorded versions to share with auditioning students
Auditions and Casting Support
- Attend all auditions and callbacks to evaluate vocal ability musicianship and character suitability
- Lead vocal warm-ups before vocal auditions and callbacks
- Teach and direct vocal excerpts during callbacks and assist in running vocal callback
- Provide vocal and musical input to support final casting decisions in collaboration with the Director and Choreographer
Rehearsals and Musical Preparation
- Attend all scheduled music rehearsals (using piano keyboard or backing tracks as appropriate)
- Collaborate with the Director and Choreographer to create a music rehearsal calendar identifying which students are called for each number
- Lead sectional and full ensemble rehearsals including soloist and duet coaching
- Create and share additional rehearsal materials (e.g. part tracks recordings sheet music) in a shared drive; communicate updates through the Stage Manager
- Assist in making musical cuts and transitions as needed to fit production requirements
- Create rehearsals tracks for individual vocal parts and work with students to improve technique diction harmonies and expression
- Assign microphones and create a detailed microphone tracking chart by scene and character
Technical Rehearsals and Performances
- Collaborate with the sound engineer to set mic levels and troubleshoot sound issues
- Attend all tech rehearsals to run vocal warm-ups supervise musical execution and offer feedback
- Oversee or assist with the recording of sweetener tracks as needed
- Attend all performances and lead vocal warm-ups prior to curtain
- Participate in production-related events such as the rehearsal retreat weekend and cast party
- Assist with load-out of musical/sound equipment after the final performance
Student Experience and Professionalism
- Foster a supportive educational and professional rehearsal environment
- Encourage vocal health discipline and collaboration among student performers
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with students faculty and families
- Address student concerns or conflicts related to music in coordination with the Director
Production Goals
- Support a high-quality musical production with well-prepared vocal performances
- Provide a meaningful and enjoyable artistic experience for students
- Collaborate with the creative team to uphold the schools standards of excellence in the performing arts
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelors degree or post-graduate work in Education or a related subject area.
Teaching Experience
- Proven experience in music direction preferably in educational or youth theatre settings
- Strong sight-reading conducting and piano accompanying skills (minimum intermediate proficiency)
- Deep understanding of vocal pedagogy and musical theatre vocal styles
- Ability to coach both solo and ensemble vocalists across a range of skill levels
- Experience teaching children.
