The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare is a Boston-based nonprofit with national and international reach dedicated to advancing compassionate care for patients families and healthcare providers by partnering with healthcare organizations. Our programs are implemented in over 800 healthcare settings across the U.S. Canada Australia New Zealand the UK and Ireland.

Over the next decade we aim to expand Schwartz Rounds both within existing member organizations and into new markets including acute care ambulatory centers retail health and virtual or home-based care. We are also focused on strengthening our global network of compassionate care champions and further developing our Model for Compassionate Care and its associated tools and resources.

With 50% of our operating budget supported by philanthropy and 50% by earned revenue our strategic goals include expanding our reach into new healthcare settings deepening our engagement with clinical leaders growing our community of compassionate care champions and building partnerships aligned with our mission.

ABOUT THE WORK:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a key member of the Schwartz Centers senior leadership team reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and working closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Board Honorary Board Leadership Council and staff. The CDO will lead all fundraising efforts across individual corporate and foundation giving.

This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing a development team which includes the Director of Individual Giving Associate Director of Corporate Engagement and Events and Development Data Manager. The position oversees a comprehensive fundraising program that includes major giving campaign giving annual giving foundation relations donor stewardship and event-based corporate fundraising which includes the annual dinner and conference. The CDOs portfolio will focus primarily on major giving.



Job Summary

Develop and lead an integrated fundraising strategy in partnership with the CEO and COO to support organizational growth and sustainability.
Create and oversee major giving programs for the Board Honorary Board and Leadership Council; cultivate strong relationships with members of these groups to achieve fundraising goals.
Staff and manage the Board Development Committee and Leadership Council including meeting planning materials development and strategies to expand and deepen member engagement.
In partnership with the Director of Communications build and manage the development-communications strategy.
Drive achievement of annual fundraising goals across all giving streams with an emphasis on major gifts.
Lead the development of the Schwartz Centers case for support in collaboration with the CEO and senior leadership.
Provide strategic guidance and oversight to the Director of Individual Giving supporting donor strategies prospect assignments and annual giving programs.
Personally manage a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals including cultivation solicitation and stewardship.
Oversee corporate sponsorship and event-based fundraising including the annual dinner and conference.
In collaboration with a foundation consultant lead strategy and execution of foundation support including research proposal development donor engagement and stewardship.
Provide strategic support for development activities within the portfolios of the CEO COO and key volunteers.
Ensure timely donor stewardship including acknowledgements and customized reporting.
Maintain clear communication and financial accountability with the Finance team regarding donor funds.
Collaborate with leaders across Mass General Brighams Academic Medical Centers (AMC) and Enterprise development offices including active participation on the MGB CDO Council to share updates align strategic priorities and collaborate with CDOs across the system.



Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree and 810 years of development experience including 35 years in a leadership or management role required
  • Experience in a membership-based or stakeholder-driven organization preferred
  • Proven success in securing major gifts and managing donor pipelines
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive solution-driven approach
  • Strong leadership communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strategic thinking with a hands-on team-oriented approach
  • Comfortable working within the guidelines of a larger institution
  • Proficiency in fundraising databases (Atlas/Blackbaud or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Desire to be a part of a mission-driven organization that is creating a better healthcare world
