Job Description

Job Title: Teacher SpEd (Dyslexia)

Reports to: Principal and Coordinator of Special Services

Pay Grade: TeacherPay Scale

Dept/School: AssignedCampus

Wage/Status: Exempt

Days: 187

Primary Purpose

The Teacher plans and implements programs to provide a positive social and learning environment with a variety of experiences utilized to help students develop skills appropriate to their age and stage of development.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for assignment

Elementary Reading Certification grades 1-8 preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Reading Specialist Training and/or Certification

Trained in the use of instructional strategies that utilize the components specified in the state Dyslexia Handbook

Experience using multi-sensory teaching techniques

Experience working with students who have special needs

Demonstrates foundational knowledge of reading development

Exhibits understanding of current assessments used in identifying students with dyslexia and reading

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years teaching experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work intensively with students identified with dyslexia using a state approved curriculum as well as with students identified with reading difficulties in order for the students to read on grade level
  • Implement the procedures in the state Dyslexia Handbook
  • Administer assessments and present results for the purpose of progress monitoring of students with dyslexia and/or reading difficulties
  • Participate in 504 SIT and/or ARD meetings related to students previously assessed or under review
  • Serve on the campus SIT committee as necessary in order to provide instructional support for teachers of identified students
  • Collaborate with SIT committee and/or reading intervention specialists to develop individualized intervention plans for students
  • Cooperatively participate in Dyslexia Specialist Team meetings
  • Develop and present annual parent orientation about dyslexia as a member of the Dyslexia Specialist Team
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues students parents and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal state district and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Working Conditions:Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing stooping bending kneeling pushing and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desks and other classroom or adaptive equipment.

Regularly sit talk or hear; frequently required to use hands to finger handle or feel; frequent repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-50 pounds; occasionally required to stand walk reach with hands and arms; vision abilities include close vision; and color vision regularly work with frequent interruptions maintain emotional control under stress; the noise level is usually moderate. The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position which may cause significant stress. The employee must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues. Predictable and regular attendance expected.
