Overview
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) develops creative ethical leaders in science technology engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry ().
The faculty and staff of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) invite you to join them in shaping and implementing the next generation of innovative and engaging learning experiences. IMSA is actively seeking applications for the full-time position of Area Coordinator in the Office of Residence Life.Area Coordinators are full time live-in professional staff members. Key responsibilities include the supervision mentoring and training of Resident Counselors assisting with the development of the residential student leadership program housing facilities hiring and implementation of the Residential Life Curriculum. The Area Coordinators work with the Directors of Residence Life to provide structure leadership vision and development to the Office of Residence Life. The Area Coordinators work hours vary and include evening and weekend responsibilities as the Administrator on Call. We anticipate this position having a one year term of appointment but there may be a possibility to extend it into a regular or move the employed candidate into another role at IMSA.

Responsibilities
Principal Responsibilities:
- Train supervise and evaluate 8-12 professional Resident Counselors
- Participate in Administrator on Call rotation supervising on-call Resident Counselors and providing crisis and emergency response in accordance with Academy policies
- Fulfill assigned operational responsibilities which may include:
- Residential Student Leaders (RSLs) - conduct the RSL selection training and evaluation process annually develop programming resources
- Hiring - coordinate the hiring and onboarding of RC Staff
- Professional Development - develop professional development opportunities and coordinate trainings for RC staff
- Building Managers - ensure supply needs are met in the halls
- Peer Tutor Program - conduct Peer Tutor selections training and evaluation process annually
- Academic Support - monitor at risk students represent the department at weekly strategy meetings communicate student needs and concerns within the academy.
- Facilities Liaison - represent department at weekly facilities meetings communicate department needs and concerns follow up with work orders and changes as necessary.
- Oversee all Resident Counselor administrative processes including but not limited to weekly reports check sheets attendance in halls PowerSchool and Footprints recordkeeping and email listservs; regularly assess practices for effectiveness revise processes as needed and train staff on revisions as they occur
- Conduct monthly walk-through of residence halls to identify maintenance needs assess damages ensure building cleanliness and confirm overall building safety
- Supervise and assist with building openings and closings
- Enforce Academy policies throughout the campus
- Conduct student disciplinary hearings as assigned by the Chief Hearing Officer
- Maintain up-to-date budget records and submit budget-related paperwork in a timely manner
- Develop and maintain the Residential Life Curriculum based on research and best practices; maintain an inventory of programming resources for staff and student leaders
- Active engagement with best practices and emerging issues in higher education gifted student learning student housing and student affairs
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with offices on campus including but not limited to security maintenance faculty and the front desk
- Establish positive relationships with students through informal interactions
- Represent the Department of Residence Life on designated committees
- Assist in recruitment of Residence Life team members
- Assist with divisional and campus-wide events such as Preview Day Convocation and Graduation
- Attend weekly staff and department meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Skills and Experience:
The required skills and experience for this position include:
- Bachelors degree
- Experience supervising professional staff
- Previous professional experience working with adolescents and/or residential experience
- Demonstrated crisis management skills and ability to respond to emergency situations requiring use of stairs quick movement and administration of first aid/CPR
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Comfortable using technology to communicate and increase efficiency
- Strong service orientation and ability to relate effectively with diverse individuals and groups at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated ability to be productive deliver high quality work take initiative use good judgement and problem solve
- Ability and willingness to work irregular hours
- Valid drivers license
Salary and Benefits:
Salary for this position is $40000 ($41500 with a masters degree) for a 10-month plus 15 work day (200 work days/per year) term of employment. We anticipate this position having a one year term of appointment but there may be a possibility to extend it into a regular or move the employed candidate into another role at IMSA. IMSA offers a comprehensive state benefits package (major medical dental and vision) with rates found hereand a retirement plan through the State University Retirement System (SURS). Live-in accommodations include a furnished apartment (limited occupancy based on apartment size) and meal plan.
